Swap Park Development Project
Stage 1 - The Grass is Growing
Here are several photos taken on October 3 showing how well the grass growth has taken off. Only days earlier the park was nothing but dirt.
Stage 1 - Groundwork
Work has begun on the Swap Park development project. Several weeks ago the Matamata-Piako District Council gave the green light to release the funds required to undertake the groundwork. The first step is to strip the surface back, install several new soak holes, level it, then seed the area so that we can make the most of the prime spring grass growing conditions.
The groundwork is the first stage of a project that will eventually see the club move to Swap Park. Depending on how well the grass grows, the plan is to begin using Swap Park in 2013 for pre-season training and selected other games. We'll also use 2013 to source the funding required, and then build the required facilities, with a view to moving in 2014.
The lower area at Swap Park has room for three full size pitches, with banking on up to three sides of the playing area. The upper area, accessed off Burwood Road, will be used for off-road parking and the new clubrooms. There is also ample space for further development.
Background
Due to lack of space and facilites at the Domain we started looking at Swap Park, along with several other potential venues, as an alternative home for football in Matamata. This work began several years ago, before an initial proposal was put to the Matamata-Piako District Council in June 2010. Our proposal was deferred for a year, with the council setting aside money in their 2011/2012 annual budget for work to begin. Groundwork began in September 2012. Below are some photos of Swap Park prior to the groundwork beginning.
