Preliminary Games
April 24: Matamata Falcons 1 vs. Western United Rustlers 1 (half time 0-1)
A tough encounter yet again engaged at the domain Saturday morning. A clash of the 2009 1st division teams was a nail biter. Western United went up just before the break after some movement forward by the falcons was not tracked back. Left with a 4 on 2, United capitalized with 1 min on clock till the half time whistle. The second half changes to the shape and players swiftly turned the game around. A lot of long distance shots from the Rustlers were easily stopped by Bailey as he secured many a ball lofted into the goal mouth. Jeremy closed down space so well again this week making some great passing shots into the goal mouth.
With this years teams playing an extra 10 min on a bigger field, the fitness of Matamata shone through. With 5 mins to go, a through ball by Kyle to Rueben had a flat footed defense hot in pursuit. Not able to reach Reuben, he shot for goal, passed the committed keeper and rolled into the left hand corner. The crowd erupted with joy. A penalty decision just before the final whistle was turned down as they took Kyle down in the box. Unlucky not to have that one, but happy with the good game and the determination shown by the kids to get their way back into the game.
New World and McDonalds player of the day: Bailey Froome. Scorers Rueben Wigelsworth x 1
