Friendlies Saturday October 18 Hamilton Wanderers U-19 6 v Swifts U-19 0 The Metso Matamata Swifts under-19s have been beaten 6-0 by Hamilton Wanderers under-19s in their final warm-up match before the NZ U-19 Championships. The classy Wanderers outfit, full of players with senior football experience, ran away with the match late on, after taking a 2-0 lead into the break. For the Swifts lads it was another eye-opener as to what they can potentially expect at the tournament. Saturday October 11 Tauranga City Utd U-19 6 v Swifts U-19 2 The Metso Matamata Swifts under-19s have been beaten 6-2 by their Tauranga counterparts in their penultimate match before the 2008 NZ Youth Championships. Tauranga, semi-finalists in the 2007 event, were a little too sharp although the Swifts lads showed enough going forward to suggest they'll score goals at the tournament. As the score indicates, Matamata proved too brittle at the back in this match but, in defence of the defence, only 12 players from the 18 man squad were available for this match. The under-19s play their final warm up match against Hamilton Wanderers next Saturday in what will be an equally tough fixture. Wanderers will be among the favourites to win the Satellite Tournament, the same section the Swifts will contest. The two teams have, however, been drawn in different groups so may not meet at the tournament. Saturday September 27 Swifts U-19 6 v Swifts XI 6 The Metso Matamata Swifts U-19 team has drawn the first match in their build-up to the NZ U-19 Youth Championships. Down 3-1 at half time against a Swifts senior XI, the team recovered in the best possible manner to level the game at 6-6 by the final whistle. In scruffy conditions, missing a clutch of players (including the two allowable guest players), and suffering from a dodgy ref, the side showed enough to suggest they could perform well on the national stage. |
