Lowry to leave Matamata Swifts

Long-time Matamata Swifts 1st team coach, Duncan Lowry, has decided to call time on his involvement with the club.

"I've been with Matamata Swifts for eight years, after initially planning to stay for only three," explains Duncan. "Now it's time for me to step aside and leave the way open for the club to appoint a new coach. That coach will have plenty to work with as Matamata Swifts is a fantastic organisation. I've enjoyed eight challenging and happy years with a great club and will look back on my involvement with fondness. I leave with plenty of great memories."

Duncan doesn't appear to have any firm plans for his future involvement in football, but he'll surely be in demand. "This is more about giving Matamata and its' players a new voice to listen to and be inspired by. I've probably taken the team as far as I can. Who knows what the future will bring, but at this point in time I'm just looking forward to spending some more time at the beach and with my family."

Matamata Swifts President, Dwayne Barlow, is sad to see Lowry leave but is also realistic enough to know it's the correct decision. "It is disappointing to see Duncan vacate the Swifts hot seat, but I can appreciate and understand his reasons for doing so," says Barlow. "He's done a fantastic job for us over a long period of time and will go down as one of the most influential personalities in the history of our small club. I've enjoyed my time working with Duncan and he'll always be welcome back for a beer and to discuss old times."

Matamata Swifts will now turn their attention to the recruitment of a new leader. "We have an exciting few years ahead of us and we'll be looking to appoint someone who shares our values and has the vision to build a successful team that is the flag-ship for our club," explains Barlow. "The development of a new playing arena and facilities at Swap Park is gaining momentum and we're looking forward to the day the Swifts finally take the field at our new home."

Duncan Lowry began with Matamata Swifts as player/coach at the start of the 2005 season. He played 81 league and cup games for the Swifts and was in charge for a total of 175 games. Lowry took the Swifts 1st team from Waikato League obscurity and turned the team into a Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation League power house, before turning his attention to the challenge of NRFL football, where the club has played since 2010.
