MATCH REPORT

It was a trio of matches at the Matamata Domain this week as both mens teams hosted local rivals Cambridge, while the ladies took on Huntly on Sunday.

The Stanley Group Matamata Swifts Federation 1 side were looking to avenge a painful early season loss to Cambridge while at the same time getting back into winning ways as they hosted their, geographically, closest rivals.

It was the home side that started the better. Playing with a rejigged line-up as Adam Roach replaced captain Colin Taylor, out due to injury, the Swifts exerted the early pressure and created the better chances early in the match. It wasn't hard to predict that Matamata would be the first to score, what no-one predicted was the scorer. A corner from the right couldn't clear the first defender. His clearance, however, went straight back to Andrew Clothier whose follow-up cross was a lot more dangerous. It went deep to Scott Parsonage whose centering header fell to left-back Gary Dobson whose left footed volley gave him just his second senior goal and Matamata the lead.

It had been a similar story in the first match between these sides, Matamata had taken an early lead only to squander a host of chances to put the match away. There was to be no such mistake on this occasion. The Swifts second once again came from a corner, this time from the left, and once again it was a new name on the score sheet. Ben Watson drove a low ball into the box which caused havoc for the Cambridge defence. A collision saw the ball sit up in the box and centre back Dwayne Signal pounced to double the Swifts advantage.

Matamata weren't done yet though. A Watson attack down the left appeared to have been snuffed out as Cambridge won the ball. Watson didn't give up, though, and his persistence was rewarded when a short back pass gave him an opening. A crafty toe put the ball between the keeper's legs and Watson composed himself to slot the ball into the empty net from a tight angle.

With a 3-0 advantage at the break, the game appeared over, though Cambridge were always likely to come out firing early in the second spell as they looked for a way back into the match. Unfortunately, for the game as a spectacle at least, they pushed it too far. A sharp word to the referee reeked of frustration, and put Cambridge down to 10 men to make the difficult comeback seem impossible. And it went from bad to worse when a tussle on the ground saw yellow cards to both teams. Unfortunately, it was the second yellow for the Cambridge player and, 11 players on 9, there was only one result possible.

It was obvious that Matamata knew they couldn't be beaten, and the quality of the football seriously declined as the intensity in the match disappeared. Cambridge did manage to create chances even playing at such a numerical disadvantage, while the Swifts were always likely to be threatening when they kept possession of the ball, something they failed to do with enough regularity. There would be no change to the score in the second half and, while Matamata will be satisfied with a comprehensive 3-0 victory, they will be disappointed not to have been able to pad out their goal difference. Player of the match went down to Scott Parsonage.

In the early game of the day, the Peter Vossen Builders Federation 2 side went down 2-1. A lacklustre first half saw them trail by 2 at the break. There was a greater effort in the second spell but, while both ends found themselves under threat, it took until the 90th minute for the Swifts to find the net. Jeong Min Hyun was brought down in the box and Joe Gifford stepped up to slot his 5th penalty of the year.

The Challenge Swifts Ladies side met Huntly looking to improve on a 9-1 loss early in the season. And it was indeed a match which showed the huge strides this team has made. The first half was a closely fought affair with plenty of chances at both ends but no goals. The visitors had the better of the second half but some stoic defending gave the Swifts their second point of the year and a 0-0 draw. Player of the match went to Rebecca Stewart with special mention to Chloe Verstraten.

Next week sees the Federation 1 side make the long trip down to Taupo while the Federation 2 team travel to Te Awamutu. The ladies have a bye while the Under-15s are back in action with a trip to Te Kuiti.
