The Matamata Domain welcomed the league leaders for both divisions as the Stanley Group Matamata Swifts Federation 1 side took on Ngongotaha while the Peter Vossen Builders Federation 2 team met Tauranga Boys College. The day dawned bright and clear and encouraged the supporters down for what promised to be some tough, but quality, football.
Ngongotaha came to Matamata in hot goalscoring form having recently overtaken the early season favourites for the Federation 1 title. And they had the better of the opening stages of the match, a free kick on the edge of the box within seconds of the opening whistle was the first of a host of early chances as the Swifts struggled to cope with Ngongotaha's strike power. This chance was followed by a shot flashed over the bar while a second snuck outside the post as the Matamata defence gave the visiting strikers too much space.
With the initial flurry weathered, however, the Swifts began to work their way into the match. Passes were strung together and possession was more evenly shared, while the early defensive struggles diminished.
With their confidence growing, Matamata began to create some chances of their own. And it wasn't long before the Swifts took advantage. A couple of strong challenges on half way saw the ball break forward. Scott Parsonage latched on and struck the ball goalward from long range. While his shot took a deflection, it still had enough pace and spin to fly over the keeper and dip beneath the bar. Matamata celebrated, though this was tempered with the knowledge that they had surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose in the reverse fixture between the sides earlier in the season.
There wasn't long left in the half but there were still enough time for Ngongotaha to show signs of what the second half could hold as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Fortunately, Matamata made it to the break unscathed and took the chance to regroup at half time.
Ngongotaha had been playing a tidy, possession based brand of football in the first half, but their tactics seemed to change in the second spell as they looked to go direct. With the Matamata defence sitting back, however, this move didn't seem to help the visitors and the expected onslaught at the start of the second never materialised. Instead it was the Swifts who were creating the better of the chances, putting pressure on the Ngongotaha defence as they attacked down both wings.
With a one goal advantage, however, there is always the chance of bad things happening and the Swifts didn't seem able to find that killing blow. Fortunately, Ngongotaha were willing to give a helping hand. A Matamata free kick was knocked into the Ngongotaha box by Jamie Baxter. While the Matamata players were creating confusion, it was a Ngongotaha boot which sent the ball flying into the back of the net to give the Swifts a two goal advantage. While it went down as an own goal, Baxter was claiming it all the way to the bar.
With Matamata focusing on keeping a clean sheet, Ngongotaha did press forward and create a few late chances, including one which was just tipped over the crossbar. However there was to be no change to the score line and the Swifts completed an impressive 2-0 victory. Man of the match went to Bradley West on the right wing, with an honourable mention going to Jamie Baxter.
In the earlier game of the day, the Swifts Federation 2 side went down 5-1 after trailing 3-0 at half time. Matamata looked good on the ball but struggled against a Tauranga Boys College outfit which looked to have plenty of skill and a number of attacking weapons. Matt Aberhart helped keep the scoreline respectable in goal while Jamie Cox added to his tally for the year with a late consolation goal.
Next week all senior teams are away from home. The Federation 1 side travel to AFC Fury to face the newly appointed league leaders while the Federation 2 team take on second placed HRFC Clube. The Challenge Ladies side are back in action as well as they play Wanderers in Hamilton.
