Stanley Group Matamata Swifts have continued their consistently inconsistent season with another frustrating dropping of points in being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Papakura City.
This was a game the Swifts could have lost but should have won. An out of sorts Matamata side put in probably their worst 1st half performance of the season, before stepping things up and dominating after the break.
Papakura was clearly up for this one right from the start, looking sharp and putting consistent pressure on the Swifts through the opening 20 minutes. Their goal, midway through the first half, had a certain sense of inevitability about it, but it could easily have been much worse for Matamata. Tom Pamment was called on to make two wonderful reflex saves to limit the 1st half damage.
For all their dominance, however, Papakura weren't half vulnerable at the back. Jack McNab had a point-blank shot incredibly saved not long after the goal. McNab then hit the cross bar with the goal at his mercy, before Jon Allen saw a long range drive finger-tipped around the upright.
A few home truths were thrown around in the Matamata changing room at the break and they seemed to have the desired effect as the Swifts got hold of the game at the start of the second half and never really let go.
The goal scoring chances came and went. Mackenzie Smith scooped a great opportunity over the bar before McNab snapped the ball home in the 69th minute to level things up. And then the onslaught really began.
Andrew Carter drove a shot wide, while both Karl Bryant and Jon Allen headed over. Bryant was clipped in the box late on in what looked like a decent penalty shout, before the visitors broke but put their one big chance of the second half wide of Pamment's upright.
Matamata's form has seen them become the draw specialists in this year's NRFL division 2. Too many lost opportunities led to more dropped points than necessary. Such has been the way of things in 2012.
