MATCH REPORT

Stanley Group Matamata Swifts have brought another three points home with them following a 2-1 victory over Onehunga Mangere United. Matamata led 2-0 at the break, then survived a late scare to secure the points.

The Swifts made harder work of this win than they needed to, although their hosts made life difficult as they pressed hard and chased willingly on a difficult surface. Both sides gave away way too much cheap possession, leading to a disjointed match that rose to few heights.

Bailey Webster settled any nerves Matamata may have carried into this game with his first goal for the club on seven minutes. He tucked his shot home nicely after good build up work from Eddie Kennedy and Jack McNab.

Matamata doubled their lead 16 minutes later when Scott Parsonage caught the opposing keeper in two minds on the edge of the area, forcing an open goal opportunity which he gladly took for his second strike of the season. Not long after, Karl Bryant sent a header centimetres wide of the right upright, before Jon Allen fizzed a shot wide of the other upright from long range.

The hosts certainly had their share of possession but, more often than not, their play broke down the nearer they got to Matamata's goal.

After the break the Swifts continued to press but couldn't add the third goal that would have wrapped up the points. Their best opportunity came from the penalty spot. Bailey Webster was brought down and stepped up to take it himself. His first shot was well saved then the rebound was blazed over the top.

Jack McNab had a shot tipped on to the crossbar, while several other good chances went begging with a mis-placed pass or a slip at a crucial moment.

The hosts looked more threatening going forward during the second spell, forcing a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions and also winning a good number of corners. They managed to force home a scrappy consolation late on to set up a challenging final few minutes, but the Swifts held on for the win.
