Stanley Group Matamata Swifts have secured their first home win of the season with a pleasing 2-0 victory over Manukau City. In truth, Matamata should have won by a lot more, but a goal in each half by leading marksman, Jack McNab, ensured the win and an important three points.
The Swifts started the match brightly and created their first opportunity in the opening minutes, but Mark Knell failed to connect from close range. McNab settled the nerves in the tenth minute with his fourth goal in three days, dancing round a defender and the keeper to side foot the ball into an empty net.
Matamata had great chances from Scott Parsonage, McNab, Stu Watene and Glen Carmichael to double if not treble their lead before the break, but found the visiting keeper in good form.
Manukau attacked sporadically throughout the half. Tom Pamment was called into action not long before the break to keep the Swifts' lead. He did well to save with his feet after Manukau's attacker shot from a good angle.
The Swifts began the second half in the ascendancy and prised open Manukau on a couple of further occasions before the visitors got themselves into the match and had a good fifteen minutes spell. Ged Parkinson and Karl Bryant led the way in ensuring Matamata maintained a clean sheet.
McNab doubled the lead and put the game to bed with ten minutes left on the clock. A good ball out of midfield by Mackenzie Smith found Stu Watene, who held the ball up well before rolling it to McNab to finish.
A larger victory margin would have been more reflective of Matamata's performance, but that would be being greedy. Three home points are now in the bank and we move on to next week's derby match against Tauranga City United with the reserves of confidence slowly increasing.
