Stanley Group Matamata Swifts have secured their second away win in a row with a come from behind 2-1 victory over Papakura City. Second half goals from Scott Parsonage and Jack McNab ensured the points came home with the Swifts after they had fallen behind from the penalty spot before the break.
The match was a real open encounter that should have seen countless more goals scored. Both sides were guilty of incredible misses, with the home side having the better of the first half before the Swifts came home with a rush.
A reorganised Swifts side took time to settle. Injuries, work commitments and transfers meant that there were more changes to the side. Ged Parkinson was hauled off the beach and out of retirement to anchor the defence while Jamie Baxter made it onto the field after beginning the day in Invercargill. Dwayne Signal was pushed into midfield.
Despite the reshuffle the Swifts looked the more likely during the early stages of a game that was played from end to end throughout. Both sides had their opportunities before Papakura went ahead from the spot. Baxter was harshly deemed to have fouled his opposite number, then Tom Pamment saved the initial kick, before it was forced home on the rebound.
The home side spooned another gilt edged chance over the bar just before the break, which could have made matters much worse for Matamata.
The Swifts looked more settled after their half time sit down and once Scott Parsonage had levelled things up with a delightful chip seven minutes after the re-start there was only one likely winner.
Jack McNab had his almost obligatory shot off the woodwork before finally opening his Matamata account with a slick finish in the 72nd minute. Josh Oed, on for a hamstrung Andy Cooper, showed good energy and went close on a couple of occasions to grabbing a debut goal.
Matamata's defence, well marshalled by Parkinson and Karl Bryant, comfortably saw the game out. Jon Allen was again a commanding presence in the centre of the park, while Scott Parsonage had his most productive match since his return to the Swifts. Glen Carmichael's performance at right back, off the back of a fine Easter weekend, was impressive, while the two teenage debutants, Oed and Adrian Naicker, made important contributions off the bench.
