25th August 2007 Matamata Falcons 2 (2nd Division Champions) v Hamilton Marist Titans 0 (half time 0-0)

The Falcons were off to a wobbly start. A snap shot from the Titans had Theo Wright diving to his left in an absolutely awesome effort to keep the Falcons in the match. Theo was in electric form, most enjoyable to see and a real crowd pleaser. The Falcons had a couple of opportunities in the first half but the Titans stifled our attack with a bunched mêlée of five players. All tied at the end of the first half the team talk was stern. One goal will win the top of the table clash, a draw was bridesmaid.

The pressure was on in the second half, the 6 players stepped up to the mark and showed they wanted to be there. Wave of swooping attacks followed as the Falcons tried to knock one past the titan's keeper. A controlled build up from the back, lead by Joshua Johnson and Matthew Jeffcoat saw Kyle Fannin and Rueben Wiglesworth converting ball possession into dominating attack. The titans continued to break free on the counter attack, their efforts were blown out with great defending tackles and field placement by Mark Russenberger. Theo showed his worth in goal today with sensational diving to keep the Falcons still in the match. On the 28th Minute the tide turned, the 5 man mêlée of titans defenders slipped up, Rueben and Kyle working well together finding space and each other passing with precision. Kyle managed to slip past the defence and slot one in the back of the net. GGGOOOOAAAALLLL the crowd went wild. Well the coach did anyway. The Falcons were in the lead in must win game. We locked up shop and the titans had to attack. With this the gaps emerged in the titans defence, this allowed the Falcons to break with more attacking power. Rueben slotted another past the titan's keeper and the Falcons were soaring high. Again the crowd went wild as the goal buffer was doubled. This allowed a quick wave of substitutions to come on and show their versatility. Bailey Froome had a great shot on goal, head holding close to the corner post, deigning the Falcons a three goal buffer. Oscar Jamison linked well as the Falcons held the back line and steamed forward. Theo was again asked to make a gallant save to his right as the titans tried one last time to get a goal. It ended 2 -0 with the title being won by the Falcons in the process, leapfrogging the Titans to take it from them. Today demonstrates that it is all about a team effort with the right individual skill, technique and character mix on at the right time that give the team strength. What a game, what a day and was celebrated with Sparking grape juice, burger rings and milky ways…

Goal scorers were; Kyle Fannin x 1 Rueben Wiglesworth x 1. New World Players of the day: Joshua Johnson (Great strength & determination).

18th August 2007 League Matamata Falcons 1 vs. Hilcrest United Hammers 2 (half time 1-0)

The Falcons started strongly, within the first 5 minutes Ruben Wiglesworth latched onto a well placed pass into the centre, it was thumped and torpedoed into the top of the goal, the keeper had no chance. Mark Russenberger and Theo Wright were enjoying the day a little rain did not hurt anyone. At half time the team talk focussed on consolidation and team rotation being 1-0 up against the team we drew with last time.

The second half began with less confidence and the passing game left the field. The punt it up the middle and run game reared its ugly head. Positional play was non existent and the leaks in the usually well oiled unit started to emerge. Another wave of subs was just as ineffective, the leaks ripped open and the hammers hammered home an equaliser. The Falcons feathers were not only wet but now ruffled. Still getting to grips with the leaks the hammers hammered another shot, it was saved by the keeper but it somehow ended up in the back of the net. The Hammers closed their defence and our normally on-fire strike force was unable to slip past and capitalise. 2-1 down is how it all ended.

18th August 2007 Semi Final of WJSA Knockout Tournament

Matamata Falcons 1 vs. Cambridge Indians 2 (half time 0-0)

The Falcons in their Semi final started strongly on the neutral Glenview ground. 0-0 at half time was a fair reflection of both teams having a go and defending well. Mark Russenberger continued his fine form from the morning game. Well positioned, good passing, great defending and moving well up front earned him player of the match. Cambridge scored two times soon after the half way mark of the second half. Joshua Johnson landed a huge shot from just over half way. A brilliant goal and one he, the coach and the team will remember for some time. Well done lads.

11th August 2007 Matamata Falcons 3 vs. Hukanui Rototuna Blades 0 (half time 2-0)

Out of town for the third time in a row proved again no issue for the Falcons. Two previous encounters against the blades were convincing victories, today was time for consolidation and testing new combinations.

From the whistle the blades and their supporters were aggressive. Theo Wright made the Falcons first encounter, smothering the ball controlling the Blades attacking move. Matamata took the right hand side of the field as their preferred side. Mark Russenberger and Reuben Wiglesworth worked well together making many forward runs, containing and controlling the opposition. Joshua Johnson was on the left today making some surging runs forward whilst getting back to cover defend. It took Matamata 12 mins to break the deadlock in midfield, a jinking run down the right by Rueben, the pass to the left found Kyle Fannin, he looked up, manoeuvred past the defender and shot past the keeper. More crosses and great passing from Kyle and Rueben cut the Blades defence in half. Both were unlucky not to add a few more to the score line. The blades keeper was also in good form stopping some great one touch efforts. The Falcons continued wave after wave of attack. Then again the combination of Rueben and Kyle connected. Kyle in the middle smacked it with the right foot in the back of the net. 2-0 up a change took place, Oscar Jamieson came on and continued the forward pressure.

The Falcons opened the second half with an early goal from Oscar Jamieson, a well balanced and executed finish leaving no room for the Blades keeper to save. This is the 100th goal for the team this season (includes 4 pre season matches). Bailey Froome and Oscar hammered the goal posts there after with great midfield support from Joshua, Mark and Theo. Ten minutes to go another wave of subs saw the midfield replaced in full. Kyle, Rueben and Matthew Jeffcoat took the field and locked up any opportunity the Blades could have had. The Falcons camped in the blades half, Bailey and Oscar were unable to slot one past the keeper as he continued to make great stops and use the posts as an extra player on the field. It finished 3-0, there was magnificent passing and crossing today, absolutely brilliant to watch.

4th August 2007 Matamata Falcons 2 vs Hamilton Marist Titans 1 (half time 1-0)

The field being covered in water resembled a pool ready for water polo rather than a pitch ready for football. Travelling again out of town the Falcons took the field and looked a little out of sorts. The rain fell and fell bringing a new experience to the team playing in such hampered conditions. Undeterred the team soldiered on and took opportunities through the pools of water. Kyle Fannin took control of the left side making a carefully weighted pass into the path of Bailey Froome who coolly rounded the keeper to put the Falcons in front. Mark Russenberger again in goal this week showed his amazing keeping skills as he kept the home side behind the eight-ball for the entire half.

2nd Half: The Falcons dominated a large passage of field possession. We camped in the Titans half making life very difficult for them. Oscar Jamieson and Bailey Froome hustled on the ball, fought well and made some great efforts on goal. Hitting the posts twice and denied by the puddles in the process.

The Falcons took another goal advantage after another slip sliding left side attack. Kyle Fannin passed a couple of defenders and shot for goal, Oscar Jamieson changed the direction ensuring the keeper was beaten. 2-0 up the game was ours. The Titans thought otherwise. The pace quickened, the rain tumbled harder and the heat went on the Falcons. The Titans broke up the middle, slipped through our defence and shot passed Kent Muckle. The Hamilton puddles saved the Falcons from losing the two goal advantage. Joshua Johnson cleared the floating ball from the line. Another attack by the Titans was executed well to put them back in the game. We were still ahead at 2-1 but the Titans were motoring on what fuel they had left in their tanks. Spurred on by another dousing of rain they broke up the middle again. The Falcons had Kent as our last line keeper. He stood his ground as they shot with power at mid goal height. Kent placed his sturdy hands upwards to palm the ball safely over the crossbar… The Falcons did it. Beating and over taking the top of the table team. At this 2nd of 19 division level there is not much between the teams. Great stuff chaps, another awesome team effort.

28th July 2007 Matamata Falcons 1 vs Hilcrest United Hammers 1 (half time 1-1)

At last the Falcons were this week challenged. Inside the first minute the Falcons saw themselves behind after loosing the ball in midfield. On the back foot the Falcons regrouped and the shape of the game evened out. Tackles were being made and the passing game kicked into action. Rueben Wigelsworth and Joshua Johnson worked well together down the right flank making some good surges forward. Down the other side Kyle Fannin and Oscar Jamieson did likewise. Matthew Jeffcoat linked up the middle as Mark Russenberger dived from one side of the goal to the other saving some powerful shots, from some rather large eight year olds.

On the 13th min the team worked a couple of nice moves, created an opening, Kyle latched onto the ball, passed the defender and the keeper to keep the Falcons in the game. At 1-1 both teams continued with the pressure on each others goals for the remainder of the half.

The second half began with the Falcons attacking on the left and right. Bailey Froome, Rueben, Kyle and Joshua having a good go at knocking in the second, but field position at the critical finishing moment was left wanting. Theo Wright made some surging runs up the left side linking well with the team as we tried to use the width. Joshua on the other side was in awesome form at the back for the Falcons. Nothing was able to get passed him and ran it up as strongly as he defended earning him player of the day. A few last ditch efforts by the Hammers were all well saved by Mark as his confidence rose throughout the game. This was a great team effort guys lets keep up the good work.

21st July 2007 Matamata Falcons 6 vs Hukanui Rototuna Blades 1 (half time 5-0)

The game started with the Falcons firing on all cylinders. Kyle Fannin and Rueben Wigglesworth swooped on the goal and created some great opportunities within the first 10 minutes. Rueben struck first, the result of some lovely passing and combination work with Kyle. Kyle struck second, a snap shot with clinical execution. Rueben fired home the third as the Falcons dominated.

The hard working Joshua Johnson and Mark Russenberger made a solid contribution running up and down the two flanks distributing well. The 11th minute saw the use of all 3 rolling subs (60% change in the outfield). On came Bailey Froome, Theo Wright and Oscar Jamieson taking it to the Blades as though no change had taken place. The continued pressure was rewarded with a looping goal to Oscar and an own goal after a well taken corner from Matthew Jeffcoat. 5-0 up the Falcons were able to relax in preparation for the second half, enjoy football and look forward to the next Championship round.

The second half was evenly contested on the score board being 1-1, but on the field the two teams were miles apart. The Falcons ripped the Blades defence to shreds, cutting, darting and slicing up the field with some beautiful shots on goal. All shots were worthy of a stint on TV3's football moments on a Sunday night. At the other end of the pitch Kent Muckle was making some valuable saves. A tad unlucky to have the clean sheet destroyed as one passed the goal line against the run of play.

Back into the game Matamata pressured. Another well taken corner saw Rueben run in the ball after the Blades keeper fumbled. The 6-1 result puts us at the top of the table. Keep up the excellent work on and off the field.

30th June 2007 Matamata Falcons 4 vs Hukanui Rototuna Blades 0 (half time 3-0)

Total Football for both halves left the Blades without a chance. The Falcons took a wide attacking move from training Tuesday night and within the 1st minute saw themselves ahead. A nice build up by Theo Wright, Matthew Jeffcoat and Bailey Froome gave space for Kyle Fannin to take it further and finish in the corner leaving the Blades keeper helpless on the ground. Immediately after the Blades attacked the Falcons goal, Kent Muckle made a brilliant save putting his body on the line to keep the home team's advantage of one intact.

10 minutes on, the Falcons made their usual rolling substitutions and proved critical in breaking a 9 minute deadlock. Oscar Jamieson took advantage of the loose ball and hammered in a cracker. 2 mins on, Oscar took another shot outside the box and clinically finished with the left foot past the keeper. Being 3-0 up the Falcons were soaring high.

The second half was again a dominating passage of play by the Falcons. Team members Joshua Johnson, Mark Russenberger, Theo Wright and Matthew Jeffcoat were unstoppable. No one was able to get passed them and their attacking moves up the field were also noted. Bailey, Mark, Kyle and Theo all had shots just wide of the post. A lot of pressure was being exerted on the Blades. There were telling signs that Matamata was about to score. 14 minutes into the half Matthew Jeffcoat broke free up the middle, went through a couple of players and pressured the keeper so much he fumbled it. The quick thinking Matthew followed through and toed it in the goal 4-0 up, the blades were trodden on just like the pitch grass in the worst winter rain this year.

That's how it finished and results in the boys gaining 13 points from the 15 available, becoming the Champions of the Waikato 1B division. A brilliant achievement. All that hard work at training and the parents support has paid off.

Next game: 21st July 2007. The Championship draw will be advised on the webpage of WJSA some time this week. Goal scorers were; Oscar Jamieson x 2, Kyle Fannin x 1, Matthew Jeffcoat x 1. New World Players of the day and McDonalds Acheivement awards: Matthew Jeffcoat (Outstanding play).

23rd June 2007 Matamata Falcons 3 vs Hamilton North Cougars 3 (half time 1-1)

The game of the season this Saturday saw the top of the table clash as both unbeaten teams took on each other. The Cougars opened the account as they got in behind our defence. 1-0 down the Falcons re-grouped, and made a couple of tactical substitutions. This saw the Falcons swoop down on the Cougars and claw back field domination. Bailey 5 minutes before the half ended walked the ball in the back of the net after some great team work. At 1-1, the game as evenly poised.

A tough half time team talk and another wave of positional changes saw the Falcons dominate further. Another two quick goals, one from Oscar, another from Rueben took Matamata clear of the opposition 3-1 up. Matthew and Joshua held the back line well throughout the game with player of the day Mark making the most of his opportunity on the field doing likewise. With 5 minutues to go and another wave of rolling subs saw the Cougars pounce on the Falcons, the high fliers 3-1 up were under pressure. A goal mouth mix up and another great shot past the keeper saw the lead disappear with only 1 min to go.

At 3-3, another change of the Falcons side was needed, under siege they managed to keep the Cougars out. One last ditch effort by the Cougars saw a one of one with Theo. He took control of the situation, grabbed the ball and made a sensational save. The Falcons ended the match at 3-3, heads up chaps. It was a great effort to hold last years Preliminary league winners and Championship winners to a draw. Bring on next weeks opponents, we're up for the challenge.

16th June 2007 Matamata Falcons 2 vs Cambridge Chiefs 1 (half time 1-0)

Out of town and a late game saw the boys looking fresh and ready for the next stage of the competition. The pendulum swung from side to side as both teams attacked at each others goals. The keepers at both ends were up to the task in hand. Kent seeing off a great couple of shots kept the Falcons in the game. Matthew looked solid at the back as Theo and Bailey attacked on both flanks.

Some great passing and combinations were rewarded when Kyle finished off another well placed shot. Rueben, Theo and Bailey made some surging runs up the field, unlucky not to be rewarded with the goal as the Cambridge keeper continued to save powerful shots. The first half ended with the Falcons 1-0 up.

The second half saw Cambridge take the game to the Falcons. They were rewarded with an easy goal as it passed under the keepers foot into the back of the net. The Falcons held good shape and showed composure which was pleasing to see after the shock goal. The Falcons soldiered on, attacking when possible and made some great attempts on goal. Again some nice passing and solid attacking defence saw Rueben, Kyle, Mark and Joshua creating another great opportunity. The ball came free and was pounced on. Kyle hammered home the second for Matamata.

The home front was in sight and came soon after with the whistle ending the half. With now 9 points in the preliminary round the Falcons are top of the table. A great victory away under pressure. 9th June 2007 Matamata Falcons 4 vs Woodstock Chiefs 1 (half time 1-0)

At long last the Falcons were taking on a team at home. The step up in the 1B division showed again with only one goal separating the teams in the first half. The Woodstock keeper up to the challenge as the Falcons hammered their goal. This week saw a number of positional changes within the team, everyone having a go at a different place than previous weeks.

The second half was again no exception, Matamata continued to set the pace of the game, taking it to the opposition time and time again. Another goal to both teams made it 2-1 to the Falcons who still looked the better of both teams. With another wave of changes in the field, the dynamics changed. The Chiefs stamina lacked and the Falcons drove home another two good goals. Deserved the victory lads, keep up the good work at training and on the field.

Next game 16th June, playing Cambridge Chiefs in Cambridge 11am kick off. Goal scorers were; Kyle Fannin x 2, Reuben Wigglesworth x 1, Kent Muckle x 1. 26th May 2007 Matamata Falcons 3 vs Te Awamutu Barracudas 2 (half time 2-1)

The Falcons were for the 4th time in a row travelling out of town. The 9am kick off saw the home team napping, a couple of well placed shots by the Falcons strikers were saved well by their keeper. Te Awamutu stepped up the pace of the game and their Futsal skills were showing through. Matamata Falcons had good field position, Matthew Jeffcoat cleaning up nicely as they broke through the midfield and defence. Seven mins into the game the deadlock was broken, a nice pass from within the team, some good following up, saw Kyle Fannin firing home the opening goal for the Falcons.

Another session of great defending and attacking runs from the back by Oscar Jamieson and Joshua Johnson aided the next period of pressure. Rueben Wiggelsworth and Kyle Fannin working well together in the midfield and up front, saw Kyle taking the ball down the left, cutting infield towards goal, taking a snape shot, hitting the cross bar after beating the goalie. The crowd loved it and were extactic once the rebound was followed up by Ruben Wigglesworth hammering the ball in the back of the net, 2-0, The Falcons were looking strong. Not to be outdone Te Awamutu began an onslaught on the Falcons, tough tackles and rough challenges saw some great attacks on the Matamata goal.

Theo Wright in goal made some telling saves and looked every bit confident seeing off their attempts on goal. With 2 mins to go Te Awamutu broke through and shot passed 2 defenders and the keeper to make it 2-1.Game on.

The half time pep talk and the rolling subs saw Matamata regain attacking dominance. Bailey Froome and Mark Russenburger taking it to them. Some great defending by Te Awamutu kept the Falcons at bay. 5 Mins on Te A shot passed a mix up in the Falcons defence, 2-2, all tied. The next 10 mins were a challenge for both teams. Wave of attack and defence resulted in no further advantage to either team. A change in the Falcons formation was the key to breaking the deadlock. Field position and shape proved to be the decisive tool to gain advantage. 3 massive saves from the Te Awamutu keeper kept Matamata again at bay, frustration entered into the teams play. Some side line geering inspired a great pass from Matthew into the path of Kyle. Kyle went straight for goal, beating one defender, then the keeper to secure the teams win.

Having had 18 shots on the Te Awamutu goal the win was a fair reflection of the teams strike power and their goalie’s skills keeping it out. This 1st game of the preliminary round was the game of the season thus far. The boys were up to the task taking the step up into the 1st division. Well done fella’s. Keep up the good work.

Goal scorers were; Kyle Fannin x 2, Reuben Wigglesworth x 1. New World Players of the day and McDonalds Acheivement awards: Oscar Jamieson (Grit and Determination). Matamata McDonalds trainer of the week: Kyle Fannin.

19th May 2007 Matamata Falcons 9 vs Ngahinapouri Tornadoes 2 (half time 4-2)

The Falcons were yet again away from home, the third time in a row. Up earlier and off to Ngahinapouri. The game started as the last four, the Falcons dominating the first 4 minutes with two well finished goals by Kyle Fannin cutting through the defence. Maybe it was complacency, knowing that they had scored 40 unanswered goals, they took the foot off the accelerator, relaxed and Ngahinapouri spotted their opportunity. A couple of defensive blunders with no recovery run, saw a one on one with the Falcons keeper. Ngahinapuri scored and were back in the game at 2-1. The Falcons tried to regroup but during the process the Matamata keeper was in no mans land, Ngahinapouri capitalising with a great long distance shot.

All tied at 2-2, the crowd went wild. After consolidation and the use of the rolling subs, the Falcons regained their usual dominance. Another two goals by Kyle Fannin were the resultant of some good runs down the right flank by Rueben Wigglesworth and Joshua Johnson. Great distribution at key moments. The second half began just as tense and evenly contested as the first half. Ten minutes on, neither team able to finish off, saw 3 massive saves in a row from Kent Muckle, keeping Matamata 4-2 leaders instead of being down 5-4. Nail biting stuff from the side lines as the team coach was pacing up and down.

The deadlock was broken 11 mins into the 2nd half when a nice combination between Theo Wright and Kyle Fannin was clinically finshed by Theo in one touch, 5-2. The two teams continued the battle, firing shots at both ends, Matthew Jeffcoat and Mark Russenburger’s efforts kept Ngahinapouri at bay, their sting was fading. The last 5 mins had Ngahinapuri down and out, The Falcons took hold of the game and their stamia showed. 4 further goals from Baily Froome, Reuben Wigglesworth, Oscar Jamieson and another to Theo, flatered the score line and demonstrated the team’s ability to bounce back and finish the opposition off.

Bring on the preliminary games... The gradings are over!

The teams formation was again formidable, great passing and play-making resulted in some great first half goals. Rueben Wigglesworth and Kyle Fannin capitalised on field position using their pace and skill to get early goals for the Falcons. The half time changes saw different team players taking the initiative, cutting, darting and scoring past the Tamahere goalie with force. Bailey Froome and Matthew Jeffcoat making their presence felt knocking in another two fine goals for the Falcons. Another solid performance from Joshua Johnson, Marc Russenberger and Theo Wright saw the Falcons totally dominate the midfield. 5th May 2007 Matamata Falcons 9 v Woodstock Stars 0 (half time 4-0)

Second grading game and the Falcons were away from home. Travelling to Hamilton proved not to be an issue. The boys dispatched the opposition clinically throughout the game. The first half shape was as good as it gets at the top level of this division. Great field position and awareness of each other and the ball, saw them rush to the lead. By half time the score was 4-0. Some great shots, bottom and top corners, all too powerful for the opposition goalie. The second half saw the development of the team sharing the ball. The 5 second half goals shared amongst the team demonstrated their team play. Another solid all round game, keep up the good work fella’s. G
