In a clean sweep the Magpies won every game scoring a grand total of 36 goals with only 2 goals scored against them. The team was on fire and showed skill and class putting together a magnificent team effort and utilizing all the skills they had developed throughout the season proving them unstoppable on the day.

Ben Brady proved himself an excellent keeper saving some magnificent goals. Roberta Wiggelsworth was solid in defence as usual and proved very hard to get past for the opposition. Kody Nowell managed to knock in 14 goals including a hatrick in the final. Lawrence Clothier and Josh Goodwin once again proved to be the heart of the midfield equally talented in winning and feeding the ball. Saturday August 26 Matamata Magpies 1 v Morrinsville Knights 2

This was a tough game from the start. The Knights were keeping a lot of pressure on and the game was very evenly matched.

The Knights managed to score within the first five minutes of the game putting the pressure on the Magpies. Ben Brady had a great game and worked very hard with a couple of solid shots at goal but was unlucky not to score. Roberta Wigelsworth was being tested in defence but did a great job at heading off the Knights.

Logan Raynel managed to score the Magpies first and only goal following some great teamwork through to him leaving him with a clear shot at goal.

When the Knights did manage to get through, Dillon Sankey proved his worth in goal with some awesome saves. Josh Goodwin was as determined as ever and managed some great runs up field with a couple of close attempts at goal but was unlucky to miss the mark.

The Knights goalie was proving difficult to get past. In an evenly matched game where a draw looked inevitable a costly mistake in the last few seconds of the game saw the Knights score to clinch the game.

A disappointing end, but well done to the Magpies for coming out on top in their division despite this result. A great end to the 2006 soccer season.

Saturday August 19 Matamata Magpies 6 v Southwell Rovers 0

The game started with good pressure from both sides and Southwell seemed more determined than our last encounter with them.

An early shot by Lawrence Clothier was unlucky to miss. Josh Goodwin and Blair Underwood were working hard to keep possession of the ball and Kody Nowell was unlucky to miss an awesome shot at goal.

Soon after Kody made a great pass through to Logan Raynel across the goal box and Logan took the opportunity to slot a neat goal.

Roberta Wigelsworth was working hard in defence and was determined not to let the Rovers through. Half time saw the Magpies leading 2-0.

Second half Matt Watkin took control and scored a blinder after an awesome corner kick by Lawrence Clothier. Persistence paid off for Josh who found a way through a defensive wall to score.

Kody managed to score another couple of goals following some fancy footwork up field to secure our 6-0 win.

Player of the day went to Matt Watkin and Lawrence Clothier.

Saturday August 12 Matamata Magpies 2 v Claudelands Rovers Eagles 0

Unlike our last encounter with the Eagles, this game proved a lot tougher.

The Eagles were keeping the pressure on and the Magpies were slow to fire up. Kody Nowell managed to score an awesome goal after weaving through the Eagles up the field and slotting it neatly into the goal. Soon after Lawrence Clothier had a solid shot at goal but the Eagles keeper managed a great save.

Matt Watkin and Ben Brady also had a go at scoring but were unlucky. Finally in the second half the Magpies woke up and kept good pressure on the Eagles and Kody managed another great shot at goal but couldn’t manage to get it past the Eagles determined keeper. Persistence paid off for Kody though who managed to score again.

Blair Underwood and Angus Wilson both had a great game which earnt them both player of the day.

Saturday August 5 Matamata Magpies 3 v Morrinsville Knights 2

Unlike their last outing, Morrinsville Knights were a very even match for Magpies. With an early goal from Lawrence Clothier within the first 5 minutes the Magpies were at ease until an equaliser from the Knights livened this game up.

Dillon Sankey was called upon to make some great saves and had a solid game in goal. A great attempt at goal 15 metres out from Ben Brady saw the Knights keeper take a difficult high ball. Kody Nowell was again lethal on his left foot but only managed to put one past the keeper from an acute angle to score an amazing goal.

Morrinsville Knights scored soon after to level and shots from Josh Goodwin, Logan Raynel and Ben Brady were unlucky not to make it past the Knights keeper. Roberta Wigelsworth was working hard in defence as usual to keep the Knights at bay.

A corner right on full time saw Magpies strikers Matt Watkin and Kody Nowell both get a foot to the winning goal.

Player of the day went to Josh Goodwin who once again showed determination and skill.

Saturday June 29 Matamata Magpies 12 v Southwell Rovers 1

What a game! Unlike their last encounter the Magpies trounced Southwell Rovers with a 12-1 stinging. A brilliant goal tally of 7 goals by Kody Nowell saw him at his best all season, deadly on his left foot, in a game with moments of passing and teamwork the goals still managed to come freely.

Blair Underwood managed to get on the score sheet for the first time this season with 2 goals and Logan Raynel managed to steer 1 home off the post after a couple of near misses. Josh Goodwin was again at his best and showed his dominance in midfield and down the left flank and was rewarded with a goal. Matt Watkin chased tirelessly in Kody’s absence to be rewarded with a goal as well after a great run up field leaving the Rovers in his wake.

Dillon Sankey was called on to make a magnificent save as Rovers had their first sold attempt at goal after the first 10 minutes. Lawrence Clothier was unlucky not to score after a solid build up through the midfield and Angus Wilson also worked tirelessly during his time of field. Well done team to a great result.

Joint player of the day went to Matt Watkin and Blair Underwood.

Saturday June 22 Matamata Magpies 6 v Claudelands Rover Eagles 0

This was a great game for the Magpies who played well together as a team. It was off to a tough start with the Eagles keeping the pressure on and making it hard for the Magpies to get through to the goal but the Magpies had a number of attempts which the Eagles goalie managed to save. Ben Brady finally managed to get a fantastic goal through right up over the players and goalie's head into the back of the goal.

Josh Goodwin was having a great game as well and managed a couple of solid attempts at goal but was unlucky to miss the mark but managed to keep some good pressure on the Eagles. Matt Watkin was unlucky not to score off a corner ball which he attempted to put in the goal but once again the Eagles goalie saved the day for their team.

Robert Wigelsworth was great in defence as usual and Dillon Sankey managed a couple of great saves in goal when the Eagles did finally manage to get the ball through. Half time the score was 1-nil which made the Magpies a little nervous.

Back on field for second half saw the Magpies step up a gear and the Eagles seemed to lose a little of their determination because we seemed to be the much stronger team. Logan Raynel was having a great game today but after missing a couple of attempts at goal managed to fire home a great goal after a nice pass through from Kody Nowell.

Soon after Kody got his chance to score when he was allowed a free kick after a foul by the Eagles which he slotted in neatly. Josh Goodwin also got his chance and managed to tap in an easy goal effortlessly.

The Eagles were making a few mistakes with the pressure on them and after a hand ball was called Kody took another free kick for a magnificent goal up over about 5 players into the back of the goal. The Magpies were on fire and the final score of 6-nil reflected this.

Well done team for the great start to our championship rounds. Player of the day went to Logan Raynel.

Saturday July 1 Matamata Magpies 2 v Wanderers Lightening 0

This game was certainly not one of the best the Magpies have had this season but somehow we managed to get a couple of goals to secure a win.

The Wanderers started off tough with a lot of pressure on the Magpies but we managed to meet the challenge and retain possession of the ball for most of the first half. Josh Goodwin had an awesome game with his first goal of the season only 5 minutes into the first half which he slotted with great accuracy and determination.

Ben Brady also had a great game with some solid attempts at goal when he could but unfortunately the goal proved elusive today for him. Lawrence also tried hard to get the ball in as did Kody Nowell and Matt Watkin but it was just not happening. Roberta Wigelsworth also played a good game and kept the pressure on in defence not allowing the Wanderers many chances to get near the goal. Logan Raynel also had some hard kicks at goal but missed the mark today.

Five minutes before half time Josh took his chance again and managed to slot a great goal in leaving the Magpies leading by 2-0 at half time.

Back on for second half showed the Wanderers a bit more determination but the Magpies managed to keep the pressure on and Josh was as determined as ever not to let the ball through. Finally Dillon Sankey got his chance to prove himself in goal and managed a couple of good saves.

This was a frustrating game as the Magpies should have won by a bigger margin but today the team didn't seem to gel as it had last week. I think they are all ready for a holiday so team you can all have two weeks off.

Player of the day went to Josh Goodwin for his consistent play and good pressure on the opposition.

Saturday June 24 Matamata Magpies 2 v Glenview United Thrashers 2

This was always going to be a tough match as the Thrashers are sitting at the top of the table in our division. The Magpies went on to the field looking very united and showed some great skill and teamwork with their passing to one another and kept the pressure right on the Thrashers from the start.

Kody Nowell had a solid attempt at goal early on but was unlucky to miss and soon after Lawrence Clothier also had a crack at goal but the Thrashers' goalie made a great save. After some skillful teamwork by the Magpies through the field the ball was passed to Kody who had a brilliant clear shot at goal and managed to slot it in at close range.

Some great play shown by Josh Goodwin who seemed to be everywhere and was determined not to let the ball through and also by Roberta Wigelsworth in defence who also made it hard for the Thrashers to get near the goal. Ben Brady worked well in goal this first half and showed his skill with two magnificent saves enabling the Magpies to retain the lead. Matt Watkin had a couple of good attempts at goal but was unlucky to miss on both occasions.

Unfortunately the Thrashers managed to get the ball up to the goal drawing our goalie out and managed to slot it in neatly for their first goal. Half time ended up with 2-1 to the Magpies.

Back on field for the 2nd half showed the Thrashers determined to win and they were keeping the pressure on the Magpies. We managed to meet the challenge and worked hard at keeping possession of the ball. Logan Raynel had a couple of good attempts at goal and was unlucky to miss as did Lawrence, Matt and Kody. Ben worked well back on field after the first half in goal. Blair Underwood also managed to keep the pressure on the Thrashers with some fancy footwork and some confident passing to his team mates.

Dillon Sankey was in goal for the second half and managed a neat save but unfortunately with about 10 minutes to go the Thrashers found the gap and managed to get past Roberta (I don't know how!) and score their second goal evening up the score board. Angus Wilson got stuck in to the game as well and had a few good runs up field but unfortunately the Magpies didn't manage to score again as the Thrashers were determined not to let the ball through which left us with a draw which was a little disappointing as we felt we were the stronger team on the day.

Coach Malcolm Raynel praised the Magpies for their great play and teamwork displayed today. Player of the day went to Kody Nowell for his excellent teamwork and passing.

Saturday June 17 Matamata Magpies 1 v Southwell Rovers 1

The game started off with a wet start which made the ground really muddy and slippery. The battle was on with both sides determined to win possession of the ball but the slippery field made this a very hard game.

The Magpies looked the stronger team though and tried a couple of attempts at goal early on but were unlucky to miss. Matt Watkin was digging it in and had some good runs up field with Josh Goodwin worked well together but the Rovers were determined not to let the ball through. Once again our goalie, Dillon Sankey had to come off and was replaced with Ben Brady in goal who managed some great saves.

Half time we had a nil-all score.

Back on the field for the second half showed some great skill from Josh Goodwin and determination to get the ball through for the Magpies but the Rovers were keeping the pressure on and with a lot of mud this was anyone's game. Unfortunately due to a foul the Rovers were awarded a free kick and with 5 Magpies in front of the goal I don't know how the ball managed it but they scored, much to their delight.

This was enough to fire the Magpies up and Matt had a solid attempt at goal as did Lawrence Clothier but both were unlucky to miss. Some great teamwork by Blair Underwood through to Logan Raynel set up an opening for a goal which Logan was quick to take up but unfortunately the Rovers goalie managed a great save. Soon after Kody Nowell took his chance at goal but was unlucky to miss but after biding his time Kody managed to slot a goal in nicely from a great angle taking the Rovers goalie by surprise.

Ben was replaced in goal by Logan to go back on field to boost the side but with these muddy conditions it was a very difficult task. Angus Wilson had some great play and managed some great passes through to his team mates. Roberta Wigelsworth was also working extremely hard today and frustrating the Rovers, I am sure, with her determination in keeping possession of the ball.

The Rovers had another attempt at goal but Logan managed a magnificent save by diving on the ball and ended up covered in mud. The end result was a good one considering the conditions on the day and the players were praised by their coach for a job well done.

Player of the day went to Roberta Wigelsworth for her consistent determined play on field in defence.

Saturday June 10 Matamata Magpies 0 v Te Awamutu Tornadoes 1

The game started with pressure on from the Tornadoes early on but the Magpies managed to hold their own and the battle was on.

The first half saw some great defence by Roberta Wigelsworth as usual but she certainly was working hard today. We saw some great footwork and skill from Josh Goodwin and Lawrence Clothier holding off the Tornadoes. Unfortunately due to illness our goalie, Dillon Sankey, had to come off the field early on and was replaced by Blair Underwood who managed a couple of good saves.

First half ended 0-0. After a team talk with coach Malcolm Raynel, the Magpies went back on to the field fired up and put some huge pressure on the Tornadoes, retaining possession of the ball a lot of the time. Josh Goodwin had an attempt at goal but was unlucky to miss and then soon after Matt Watkin tried his luck but unfortunately he also missed the target.

When the Tornadoes did manage to get through Blair Underwood managed some magnificent saves in goal to ward them off. Soon after Logan Raynel had a good solid attempt at goal but was unlucky to narrowly miss. This was the story of the second half unfortunately as the Magpies managed quite a few attempts at goal with the ball being in our possession 90 percent of the time.

Angus Wilson also got stuck in and had a great game with his determination in not letting the ball through. Unfortunately the Tornadoes found a gap with only 5 minutes left in the game and were lucky enough to score a goal in a twist of fate which just rolled in.

Player of the day went to Lawrence Clothier for his great work and consistency on field.

Saturday May 27 Matamata Magpies 4 v Morrinsville Knights 0

The game started with pressure on from both sides but Magpies stepped up to the challenge with an awesome goal by Lawrence Clothier within the first five minutes. Soon after Kody Nowell had a solid attempt at goal but was unlucky to hit the crossbar with the ball bouncing back out.

Some great teamwork and passing through to Logan Raynel enabled him to slot a nice goal from the right wing. The Magpies stepped up to keep the pressure on the Knights with the ball staying in the Magpies half a lot of the time but when it did manage to get through, our great defender, Roberta Wiggelsworth, was there to save the day with some good solid kicks back up field. Half time the score was 2-0.

Back on field for second half showed the Knights determined to come back but the Magpies managed to keep the pressure on with some great skill shown by Josh Goodwin who was not letting the ball get past. Also some great work by Blair Underwood and Angus Wilson had the Knights having to work to get through.

Finally the Knights managed to get the ball past our defence to have their first attempt at goal which Dillon Sankey managed to save with great skill and soon after he had his chance to shine with another great save. Well done Dillon!!

Matt Watkin was playing his heart out as well and finally got a great break to score his first goal of the day. This certainly put the nail in the coffin for the Knights with the end result being 4-0. Well done Magpies.

Player of the day went to Josh Goodwin for his great team play and skill on field.

Saturday May 20 Matamata Magpies 1 v Te Awamutu Tigers 4

This game proved to be a real nail biter as the Tigers were tough opponents. Magpies kept great pressure on the first half with a very evenly matched game. We saw some awesome defence work by Ben Brady who stepped up to the position in the absence of Roberta Wigelsworth proving more than capable and throwing his whole body in against the ball to stop it getting through.

Josh Goodwin also had some amazing runs up field and showed some great determination against the opposition. Dillon Sankey again proved his worth in goal with a couple of awesome saves. Unfortunately the Tigers managed to get through to score two goals, one being a penalty for a hand ball which challenged our keeper with an awesome goal by the Tigers.

Great play by the Magpies with an end result of 7-0. The other team never looked like scoring with the Magpies looking to be the stronger team by far. Player of the day went to the whole team for their great work together as a team.

Magpies started a little slow with the Vipers swamping the ball but they soon woke up and put pressure on the Vipers. A number of shots at goal were unlucky to have not gone in.

Dillon Sankey had a quiet first half in goal but did make a great save when the ball managed to get through to him on one occasion.

Magpies scored one more goal before half time following some great passes up field by Lawrence and Blair to Kody Nowell who managed to slot it in nicely leaving Magpies with a strong lead of 3-0 at half time.

2nd half had the Vipers come on determined to score but this never looked likely with the Magpies showing some great teamwork and passing which enabled them to score another goal by Kody. Saturday April 29 Matamata Magpies 0 v Cambridge Raiders 2

Our first game of the season was to be a real tough one as the Cambridge Raiders were top of the table for the first division last season.

After a good talk to the team from coach Malcolm Raynel they went onto the field fired up but the pressure was put on right from the start by the Cambridge Raiders which looked like we could be in for huge loss but the Magpies rose to the occasion and kept good pressure on with some great runs up field by Blair Underwood, Matt Watkin, Lawrence Clothier and Kody Nowell.

Coach Malcolm was pleased with the team’s performance and felt the result was good considering the level of play they were up against. Player of the day went to Dillon Sankey for his great goalkeeping skills.
