JAKE ON FIRE TODAY!

Saturday July 29
Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 5 v Cambridge Panthers 0

Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners playing Cambridge Panthers away began with a first goal straight from the kick-off scored by Jake Watkin. Jake had several further attempts at goal during the first half having a great game overall. Scott Hilliar outran his opponent and got the ball past the goalie to get the second goal during the middle of the first half.

The Gunners played the game on a smaller and uneven field than that used at home. The team strung together many good passes, with Jordan Belton, Andrew Clothier and Scott Hilliar passing amongst themselves and setting the ball up for each other. Good defence from Jared Dickinson throughout the game saved many close calls from the Cambridge team. Scott and Jake continually shooting at the goal during the first half caused the Cambridge Panthers to have loads of red shirts in the defending positions and not on attack.

Cambridge did score but the goal was disallowed because of offside. This was followed by our boys getting another goal straight away with an initial attempt by Scott followed into the goal by Jake again. Matamata had several more shots at goal nearing the end of the first half but none of them victorious.

In the first 5 minutes of the second half, Scotty took a very opportunist long shot at goal of 20 metres, set up by Glen Carmichael, to score. After good pressure by the whole team and great keeping by Kyle Van Waveren and clearing away by Bjorn Vossen, Jake scored the most spectacular goal: he turned, looked and shot the ball into the goal getting it in the far corner of the net.

Saturday July 22 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 3 v Glenview 1

This was an evenly matched game where the boys showed determination and skill throughout. The team started off strong with Jake scoring an early goal after a pass from Andrew.

This was the only goal in the first half though there were some awesome attempts by Dylan and Andrew. Kyle kept the goal safe and Dylan showed excellent passing skills down the field.

In the second half Glenn and Bjorn worked well together to keep the ball moving down the field. Andrew scored by putting the ball through the goalie’s legs and this was followed by an attempt from Scott, Bjorn and Taylor. Jake put another one in after an excellent pass from Scott.

Kyle continued to stop attempts at goal but Glenview managed to get one in. Jarrod was solid in the back, along with Shane who did a lot of running. Glenn displayed skills and commitment throughout the game earning himself Player of the Day.

Saturday June 24 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 1 v Fairfield A 1

A great result for a hard-fought, even game which the boys can be very proud of.

The Gunners scored their goal in the first few minutes when Ollie kicked a well-aimed ball to Scott who put it straight in the net. The rest of the first half saw some excellent play with Ollie working hard to get the ball down to the goal and Scott and Jake never far away and always looking for a chance.

Some excellent defending was done by Jarred, Bjorn and Shane. Andrew was always on the ball, showing his determination and skill. Jack didn't let a ball past him when he was in defence, and Mateus, Dylan and Taylor were working hard to be first to the ball.

After half-time Fairfield scored early on and continued to put more pressure on. Kyle had a few saves in this half after a fairly quiet first half. Glen showed great perseverance when trying to retrieve the ball and never gave up, earning himself Player of the Day.

Andrew and Scott kept the pressure on the goal and a few tries were near misses. The boys kept playing hard right to the end. In the coach's absence, we had Frank refereeing the whole game and he kept up with the run of play. Pauline did a great job with the subs and the shouting!

Saturday June 10 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 0 v Peachgrove 1st XI 11

A disappointing game for the Gunners as Peachgrove put the pressure on from the first whistle and didn't let up till the game was over.

There was an attempt at goal before the first minute was up, skilfully rescued by Glenn. Scott and Jake's solid teamwork led to a very near goal early on for the Gunners, while Bjorn worked hard to defend the goal and clear the ball away.

Shane was doing some hard running to win the ball back as Peachgrove dominated. Kyle was brilliant as goalie, keeping out the ball and even managing to save three attempts at goal in quick succession by the very determined Peachgrove side. He earned his Player of the Day award. At half time the score was 4 - 0.

In the second half Peachgrove continued to dominate possession with some skilful play on their part with accurate passing and fast running. They continued to score seven more goals despite Kyle's determination and commitment to stopping the ball. There was some dispute about the offside rule, which just goes to prove it's not only women that get confused by this.

Saturday May 27 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 1 v Cambridge Tigers 8

This was the first game of the preliminary draw for the Gunners who have been placed in the top 1A division. The opposition were already known to be an outstanding team and this was reflected in their presentation, matching gear bags and at least four men in uniforms! Their presentation was surpassed only by their skilful soccer which they kept up throughout the game, from a strong start to an equally strong finish.

The Gunners kept up a valiant battle throughout with plenty of running and great hassling for the ball by all the boys. The wet conditions and slippery ball made it a challenging game on both sides.

In the first half Shane, Jarrod and Bjorn kept the pressure on the opposition. Cambridge managed to score three times but this would have been much higher if it wasn’t for the Player of the Day, Kyle, who’s goal-keeping skills were brilliant. Once the ball slipped from his hands but Dylan beat the Tigers to the ball and kicked it clear.

A near score for the Gunners was set up by Taylor and Scott but the crossbar got in the way.

Kyle continued to save numerous goals throughout the second half while the Gunners maintained the pressure with Glen and Jake working hard and Scott having another attempt at goal. Ollie had a near miss and when the Tigers goalie dropped the ball there were at least three Gunners bearing down on him until he retrieved it. Glen had an attempt at goal but the skilled work by the Tigers was difficult to get round.

The Tigers managed five goals in the second half and Jake scored the only goal for the Gunners much to the visible and audible delight of the supporters on the sidelines.

Saturday May 20 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 6 v Hamilton Marist 0

Scott Hilliar scored in the opening five minutes from great team support. There was huge pressure on the Marist goalie during the first half, but he was up to the task.

Shane continued the pressure with good balls forward. Bjorn helped by feeding the front runners with raking early balls. An awesome shot from Andrew led to the Gunners' second goal before the break.

Andrew continued his scoring prowess with two early goals in the second half. Dylan, Ollie and Jake's workrates were impressive. A lovely cross from Glen helped pile the pressure on Marist's defence.

Two goals late in the second half from Scott rounded out the scoring. A great team effort.

Saturday May 13 Cars on Broadway Matamata Gunners 5 v Hukanui Rototuna Leopards 0

Gunners put the pressure on early in this game and the Leopards goalie saved two shots at goal in the first few minutes. Scott Hilliar managed to get round him after a pass from Jake Watkins and the first goal was scored. Andrew Clothier was on form again showing excellent ball skills and an early shot at goal was a very near miss.

It was obvious early on that this would be a closely fought game compared to the first two grading games. The goalie, Kyle Van Waveren, demonstrated his skills as the Leopards made several attempts at the goal and kept the pressure on. Jake, Scott and Andrew all made solid attempts at goals and were unlucky not to succeed. Andrew then showed the power behind his boot as he took the ball down the field and kicked for goal, it hit the post then went in. This was followed by Scott scoring again with a flick into the goal.

Dylan Leuthard worked hard to support the strikers with careful planning and excellent play. They were up 3-0 at half time.

The Gunners kept the pressure on in the second half and the play stayed down in the Leopards half as their goalie worked hard to keep the score down. Bjorn Vossen earned himself player of the day with consistent play, working hard and a great goal scored by shooting neatly over everyone’s heads and into the goal.

Andrew followed this with another beautifully struck goal. Hukanui worked hard to battle for the ball and everyone played with a sense of urgency, with both goalies working hard throughout the game.

Saturday May 6 Matamata Gunners 12 v Hamilton Christian School Panthers 0

This second grading game was dominated throughout by the Gunners, reflecting a mismatching of teams which was unfortunate for both sides.

Scott Hilliar scored in the first few minutes and then scored again soon after. Most of the first half was played in the Panther’s end of the field with some fluid passing amongst the Gunners. Andrew Clothier demonstrated his excellent kicking skills throughout the game. Oliver Wright used his head to score one goal. Andrew followed this up with a goal after a corner kick from Ollie which was safely trapped by Jake and passed to Andrew to complete the task. Three more goals were scored in the first half, two by Scott (one from a header and one from his left foot), and one by Jordan Belton.

Being up 7-0 at the start of the second half, the coach took the opportunity to move the boys around. Kyle van Waveren came out of goal after a very quiet first half and Jordan took over. The Panthers were able to move some of the play onto the Gunner’s side, but the Gunners continued to get the ball down the field with some tactical passing by Bjorn Vossen and impressive ball control by Mateus Antunez-Gonzalez. There were three more goals from Scott and one from Ollie with the Panther goalie working hard and executing some impressive saves.

Shane Stafford earned the ‘Player of the Day’ for his solid play at the back. Jake Watkins scored the final goal after taking the ball down the field, chipping it over the head of the final defender, retrieving the ball and beating the keeper.

Saturday April 29 Matamata Gunners 8 v St Peter's A 3

Matamata Gunners had a great start to the season on Saturday with Scott Hilliar, supported by great teamwork from Jake Watkins, scoring the first goal in the first minute of the game.

This was followed by five more goals in the first half: 3 by Scott Hilliar, 1 from Jake Watkins, and a well-aimed header from Oliver Wright. A near miss was made after a solid attempt by Bjorn Vossen and Scott.

St Peter's failed to score in the first half with some valiant defending by Glenn Carmichael and fantastic goal keeping by Kyle Van Waveren who earned the 'Player of the Day' award for his ability to predict and, most importantly, stop the ball.

St Peter's scored early in the second half, prompting some great pressure by the Gunners. Andrew Clothier demonstrated his strength and skill, and narrowly missed the goal with a great shot. Jake Watkins put the ball in again after a handy pass by Scott. Dylan Leuthard and Matias Antunez-Gonzalez defended the goal consistently, and Scott scored the last goal for the Gunners.

St Peter's scored 2 more goals in the second half with their goalie working hard and executing some great saves.
