Matamata Swifts 3 v Putaruru 5

Despite holding the lead on three occasions the Swifts succumbed in the end to a more committed Putaruru side in a competitive local derby.

The game started well for the Swifts who had the upper hand in the first half. They were able to carve out more opportunities than in previous weeks and only several unlucky bounces denied them an early goal. But they took the lead when good work by Billy Garcia paid off, the ball running free to Bevin Shelley who coolly netted the first goal. Putaruru equalised from a corner before Bevin Shelley gave the Swifts a 2 - 1 half time lead with his second goal.

The second half saw a revitalised Putaruru side step up their efforts with Matamata back pedaling on numerous occasions. The visitors were breaking quickly with the Syben brothers showing out as usual and an equaliser eventually came. The Swifts restored their lead again when Shelley completed his hat trick and they also missed another great chance to extend this lead.

A seemingly rattled Putaruru side then came roaring back with the Swifts conceding two quick penalties to put them behind for the first time in the match and a late goal saw the visitors seal the win.

The Swifts player of the day was striker Bevin Shelley.

Swifts XI 1-Ian Moody; 16-David Mann, 14-Eric Van Waveren, 2-Adam Graham, 10-Ryan Carter; 5-Barrie Randall, 8-Aidan Miller, 6-Gwyn Hughes, 5-Barrie Randall (11-Joe Alves 80m); 9-Billy Garcia, 7-Bevan Shelley (15-Justin Read 80m).
