Matamata Swifts 3 v Ngaruawahia 0

Matamata Swifts picked up an expected home victory against bottom of the table Ngaruawahia on Saturday, finishing the match comfortable 3-0 winners in a match that very rarely rose to any great heights.

While this win was the Swifts largest of the season, the performance was not quite at the level of recent weeks as the team fell into a comfort zone. Against opponents ripe for the picking the Swifts, at times, tried to do too much when in possession of the ball, leading to periods of frustration against a team that wasn't ready to lie down.

In all honesty, though, the result was never in too much doubt, with the only question being the eventual margin of victory. A rearranged Swifts line-up threatened constantly during the first spell but took more than half an hour to get on the scoresheet. From one of the most incisive moves of the day Billy Garcia received the ball and wrong footed the Ngaruawahia goalie to roll home Matamata's opener.

The goal was welcome relief to the Swifts and settled the nerves after a period where Matamata seemed to be their own worst enemies. Stand-in 'keeper, Dave Taylor, only seemed to come under pressure when his own team mates tried to over play the ball, but he was more than equal to anything that came his way.

After the break Matamata rolled on to victory. Two more goals stretched the margin out to three with both Andre Bos and Aidan Miller opening their accounts for the season. Bos smashed the ball home at the second attempt following a goalmouth scramble, while Miller clipped a shot home from 30 yards to round out the scoring.

In truth, Matamata should really have had a few more goals but sometimes things don't always go according to the script. Victory, a clean sheet and some goals were more than enough to get the Swifts season heading back in the right direction.

Player of the day for Matamata was centre back, Gwyn Hughes, whose passion and drive were an example for his team mates. Other players to shine were Colin Taylor, at left wing-back, and an under the weather Bevan Shelley on the right.

Swifts XI 1-Dave Taylor; 14-Eric Van Waveren, 3-Neil Wiseman, 6-Gwyn Hughes; 4-Colin Taylor, 7-Bevan Shelley, 5-Garry Ewing, 10-Aidan Miller, 11-Andre Bos; 9-Billy Garcia, 12-Adam Graham.
