Less than an hour into the first match of the 2002 campaign Alves shattered his leg in a clash that caused him to miss the remainder of the season. He was back on board for 2003 pre-season training but took things slowly, spending the bulk of the year with the Sunday team. Near the end of the season, however, he had reclaimed his place in the side and scored three goals in the final four matches.
