Fencibles Utd 1 ...v... Matamata Swifts 0 >>(ht 1-0)

Match Report

THE CURSE CONTINUES

Peter Vossen Builders Matamata Swifts have sunk to another frustratingly narrow loss in Auckland, thanks to an early goal by Fencibles United at Riverhills Park.

albertoIn truth, this was a tight match of few clear cut chances. Fencibles’ goal came inside five minutes following a defensive mistake from the Swifts. Early goals and avoidable mistakes have become a bit of a habit recently for Matamata, so it was doubly disappointing to go behind in such familiar fashion.

The Swifts shaded the match in terms of possession, half chances created and corners won. Their football was a little more sophisticated than that displayed by their hosts, but perhaps not quite as effective. Matamata couldn’t quite break down the organized and committed Fencibles defense, although they did shave the upright a couple of times.

Simon Arthur and Mike Beard had good first half chances, while Fencibles scrambled the ball away from a late goal-mouth melee. Tom Pamment in the Matamata goal was called on to make two good saves late on.

Matamata’s central midfield duo of Peter Shannan and captain, Andy Birchenough, were effective, while Willie Mason put in a good shift at right back having been moved there following an early injury to Mark Knell.

Matamata is at home to Mt Albert Ponsonby United this Saturday then travel to play the same opponents in the Chatham Cup the following weekend. Hopefully the Auckland curse will be broken then.
