Peter Vossen Builders Matamata Swifts have defeated Melville United 4-1 in their latest Lotto Federation League encounter. Led by the languid brilliance of Alberto Romero and the sublime substance of Mark Abbs the Swifts, at times, played some of their best football of the season on an unhelpful surface to remain equal on points at the top of the league.
Matamata was ahead 2-0 at the break through strikes from Mark Abbs and Tim Miller. Abbs planted home his first goal for the club following a 25th minute goal mouth scramble. It was a marathon effort with the ball bouncing all over the place before Abbs finally spotted the opening he's been looking for all season.
Miller threw himself at a Romero cross seven minutes before the break to deflect the ball in for the second.
The Swifts were good during the first half, with the front two of Miller and Romero, showing some great touches and the midfield duo of Andy Birchenough and Jon Allen controling the tempo of the game. Mike Spencer was busy down the left and Mark Abbs was all class tucked in on the right.
Birchenough planted home a header early in the second half to basically secure the win for Matamata. He and Romero also hit the woodwork before Melville snatched a well worked goal of their own. Melville looked dangerous in patches, and the Swifts had goalie, Tom Pamment, to thank for keeping the margin at two goals when he superbly closed the angle on dangerous break.
Miller notched his second goal, a far post header, late on to give the Swifts a satisfying victory margin. Melville played some good football in reply and were well worth their goal.
Once again the Swifts defensive effort was very good. It's good to see the goals finally starting to fly in and that will will give the side no end of confidence heading towards the business end of the season.
The Swifts are back at the Domain this Saturday to play Ngaruawahia United. Kick-off is at the usual time of 2.45pm.
