TOURNAMENT DETAILS

1pm Matamata 2 (G. Clarke, D. Slack) v Waiuku 1.

2.15pm
Waiuku 2 v Claudelands 1.

3.30pm
Claudelands 3 v Matamata 2 (J. Collins, M. Spencer).

The Swifts had a good work out, playing two 30-minute each way matches against solid opposition at a wet Matamata Domain. Northern League division 1 side, Waiuku, was defeated thanks to goals from two of the club's younger brigade. Gareth Clark's tap-in near the start was matched by Dima Slack's sweet strike just before full time.

After sitting out for over an hour (while Waiuku played Claudelands) the Swifts put in a leg weary performance against a fit, crisp Claudelands side. A first half finish from Jason Collins and a poacher's strike from young Mike Spencer near the end weren't quite enough to win the match against what appeared to be an extremely jubilant Rovers outfit.

Matamata was able to give the entire 16-man squad a decent run, giving coach Duncan Lowry a good look, in particular, at some of his attacking options for the season. The Swifts youngsters will be better for having some more game miles in the legs and experience under the belts against good opposition.
