Matamata Swifts and Rotorua United played out a willing encounter at the Domain in their final hit-outs before the kick-off of the 2008 WBOPF Federation League. Both sides were quite obviously still experimenting but, despite this, were able to put on a good show, including a couple of superb strikes, for the expectant fans.
The Swifts scored early through new face, Andre Freitas. He expertly brought a stunning Alberto Romero through ball then volleyed home. Later in the half Romero brought out the best in visiting keeper, Andrew Gibbs, with a bullet from long range. Rotorua equalised before half time.
The second half was a muddle for the Swifts as the changes, not only to personnel but also to positions, were rung in. Rotorua looked the stronger and went ahead through Shadley Petersen. His pace took him clear of the labouring Swifts defence and his finish was emphatic.
Leo Pardini drew the Swifts level from close range, before the visitors grabbed a winner near the end.
This was another good work-out for the Swifts, with the added bonus being the opportunity to give three new players a good run. Two of them, Freitas and Pardini, were rewarded for their efforts with goals, while Flavio Santis showed more than a few glimpses of his huge potential.
The pre-season has been a frustrating one for the Swifts. While the results haven't been great, they are hardly relevant when put next to the disjointed nature of the squad selection. For a variety of reasons the Swifts have been unable to field a settled team. Coach Lowry has had a look at 27 players, most of who have proved they could do job if required.
The experiments are over, however, and next week it's for real. The Swifts travel to the Huntly Domain, a ground that proved to be a graveyard for them in 2007.
Swifts squad: Matt Aberhart; Andrew Taylor, Duncan Lowry, Colin Taylor; Leo Pardini, Carlos Rodriguez, Andy Birchenough, Alberto Romero, Scott Parsonage; Andre Freitas, Flavio Santis. Subs: Leo Regalado, Gareth Clark, Jason Collins.
