The
Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies team had their first away game
of the season over in Hamilton, and it was also the first game for
the new co-coach, Stephen Cox. Stephen will be a real help for Nat
Gaskell, giving her a chance to concentrate on her game.
Matamata arrived at a very busy Porritt Stadium where five other
football games were taking place that day. The teams collective
minds were only on one thing and that was to walk away with a win.
With a change in formation and a few of the players shifted into
different positions from the norm, it promised to be a real test,
but that was not really to be the case. Matamata dominated the game
from the start and held their ground very well. Play was spread
all over the field with Matamata passing the ball and showing some
of the great talent possessed by their players.
Credit has to be given to the Wanderers keeper as a lot of pressure
was applied to her. Thankfully after 40 minutes of play in the first
half this pressure paid off and Sarah Monteith was able to beat
the keeper and send the ball into the back of the net.
With the game at 1-0 at the half time whistle Matamata did not want
to lose again from this position. The second half didn't change
that much at all except for maybe the intensity of aggression showen
by each team. This was shown by the number of heavy tackles taking
place.
So with no change to the score line at full time, Matamata had their
first win of the season.
The Matamata Car Painters Player Of the Day went to Serena
Jenkins in at centre back. Jenkins helped win the game for Matamata
with some excellent cover defense and monster clearance kicks.
Next Sunday the Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies are at home
against Te Awamutu. Kick off is at 11am at the Domain.
