Challenge
Matamata Ladies scored a solid win against Claudeland Rovers on
Sunday. The game began a little slow and it took Matamata a good
20 minutes before their passing began to stick and they found their
rhythm. Once this happend Matamata found themselves in space and
subsequently the goals came.
Leah
Higgins opened the scoring by getting her body behind (or as she
claims "an amazing bicycle kick") a perfectly placed Serena Jenkins
corner. This lifted Matamata's heads and the second goal came soon
after. A well struck Chantelle Van Waveren kick from the edge of
the 18 yard box went through at least 10 players for her 1st goal
of the season.
Claundelands hit back just before the break, leaving the half time
score 2-1.
In previous games Matamata's second half performace and impulse
seems to drop a little, mainly due to a lack of fitness, but that
definately was not the case today. The backline of Alana Brus, Serena
Jenkins, Lani Guilford, Jo Good and Shanadelle Howardson worked
well together closing down the quick Claudelands attackers. Jen
Hull had a very good game in goal working well with the backline
and keeping the talk going.
Through some good passing and skill, Natalie Gaskell continued Matamata's
scoring with two very well placed and powerful goals. Claudelands
scored their second of the game from a Matamata un-intentional hand
ball in the box resulting in a penalty. Just before full time Sarah
Hockley smashed one past the keeper from the edge of the 18-yard
box to bring the full time score to 5-2. A deserving win for Matamata.
Matamata Car Painters player of the day went to Chantelle Van Waveren
for her accurate passing and of course brilliant goal, despite wearing
a ball in the face.
Next Sunday Matamata look to stretch their four game unbeaten record
to five when they travel away to Hamilton North.
