Match Report

The Gods were a little bit more favourable this Sunday than last, for we were blessed with glorious conditions for this all too important match against heavy weights and five time Division 1 Champions of the World, Cambridge...well maybe just the Waikato.

After conceding 11 goals to Cambridge in the previous two meetings this season we were, to be fair, a little pessimistic going into this match. Cambridge applied the pressure right from kick-off and were all over us like a bad jacket from the Op Shop. After five minutes they scored the first goal of the match, the shot just beating the out stretched giant hands of keeper Jennifer Lee Hull.

Our heads dropped and we were very unsettled for the next ten minutes of play but with a run down the left wing Sarah Hockley headed home the equaliser after a well placed cross. The half time whistle saw the score locked at 2-2 and after an inspirational talk during the break we started the second half with a rejuvenated burst of energy.

Matamata took the lead after five minutes from a shot outside the 18 yard box by midfielder Nat Gaskell. We held this lead for a further 10 minutes but a resurgent Cambridge side locked the scores up yet again making it 3-3.

Cambridge's jubilation over the goal proved to be short lived when from the restart Gaskell received the ball, ran straight through the midfield and sent a shot past the stunned keeper. 30 minutes to go and a tightened up defence of Jo Good, Alana Brus, Shanadelle Howard and Roxanne Hanson thwarted all further attempts, knocking any loose ball out wide to our very able wings of Leah Higgins and Sarah Monteith.

Final score 4-3 and the first win over Cambridge for half a decade. Brilliant effort by all members who took to the field.

Jo Good earned Matamata Car Painters player of the day.
