SWIFTS GRIND OUT GOOD WIN

Metso Matamata Swifts have secured an important and impressive road victory over Otorohanga in their latest Waikato Bay of Plenty League fixture.

moveThe score reflected Matamata's dominance of this game, but they were made to work hard for their win by a committed Otorohanga side. The Swifts dominated territory in the first half, forcing 18 corners and fashioning a number of good chances, but they couldn't manage to grab the first goal. The home side looked threatening on the break and created a couple of chances from which they could have snatched a goal of their own.

Matamata went ahead ten minutes after the break from the penalty spot. Jason Collins was hauled down in the box and Ged Parkinson stroked the ball home, as he always does from that range.

Otorohanga had their best spell of the game after the goal and went close to scoring a couple of times. Colin Taylor, Parkinson and keeper, Dave Taylor, managed to keep them scoreless with important blocks.

The Swifts completed the scoring with two goals to Neil Slater in the last ten minutes. He bundled his first home under the keeper and then powered in a close range header from an Alberto Romero cross.

The Swifts put in a good performance in difficult conditions. The team played reasonable football but, most importantly, used their experience to wear down their opponents and ultimately grind them into the grass. The goals, when they came, were worth the wait.
