Metso Matamata Swifts brought the curtain down on what has been a good season with a big win at lowly Ngongotaha. An eventful game saw the goal scoring chances flow at each end and the cards slide out of the referee's top pocket.
The Swifts were two goals up and a man down after twenty five minutes. Lucas Costa opened the scoring with his first goal for the club and was soon joined on the score sheet by Andy Birchenough who finished through a crowded penalty area. In a scuffle after the second goal Jason Collins found himself booked twice within a minute, leaving the Swifts to play the majority of the game with ten men.
The home side was given a lifeline not long before the break when Scott Parsonge was incorrectly judged to have fouled a Ngonogotaha player in the box. Gary Darkes in the Matamata goal was up to the task and pushed the resulting spot kick over the bar.
The result was made safe only minutes after the break. Andrew Jordan, having one of his best games for the club, had a long range shot kept out but from the rebound Costa swivelled to hook the ball home.
Ngongotaha gave themselves a lifeline when some generous Swifts defending gave Brad Williams an opening from which he couldn't miss. The favour was fully repaid soon after when a misplaced pass from the Ngongotaha midfield played in Neil Slater for a one on one with the keeper. Slater rolled the ball through his legs for his eleventh goal of the season.
Duncan Lowry headed home the fifth goal for Matamata then substitute, Gareth Clark, had a perfectly good goal ruled out for a phantom off-side.
Moments before the end Lowry and Williams both found themselves heading for early showers. Lowry was hit with a grusomely late 'tackle' and, in trying to protect himself, was adjudged to have retaliated. The incident nicely capped a day in which none of the three teams (Matamata, Ngongotaha and the officials) were in terribly good form.
