Metso Matamata Swifts footballed their way to their biggest win of the season, defeating a game, but outclassed, Huntly Thistle 6-0 at the Matamata Domain. Neil Slater grabbed most of the glory with a four goal haul, but it was the quality of the football on display, along with the top class finishing for all six goals, that would have sent the home fans away happy.
Slater settled the nerves for the Swifts with an expertly placed headed goal in the thirteenth minute from an Alberto Romero cross. He doubled his tally on the half hour mark drilling the ball home from out in front after a lovely team move that started at right back and went through seven players. It wasn't all one way traffic before the break with Gary Darkes called on to make one good and one great save in the Swifts goal.
Four more goals, and some breathtaking football, during the first twenty five minutes of the second half sealed the game. Andy Birchenough finished powerfully from close range in the 58th minute then substitute Andrew Taylor headed home a Slater cross with his first touch only two minutes later. Slater completed the scoring with two more goals, both excellent strikes, before the game became an exhibition.
Carlos Rodriguez, Andy Birchenough and Scott Parsonage were once again great in the Swifts midfield while Alberto Romero was as cheeky than ever. He'd be a hell of a player if he was fit!
Matamata was able to give Dai Lowry and Marcelo Marquez a decent run from the bench and in the process use their 22nd and 23rd players in 16 league games. The victory was sweet revenge for Matamata after being upset 1-0 at Huntly earlier in the season.
Matamata travels to Te Awamutu next Saturday for a game that promises to be much closer than this one. |
