Metso Matamata Swifts needed two goals in the last fifteen minutes from 16 year old substitute Gareth Clark to defeat Cambridge and secure second place in the 2007 Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation League.
In a game that never rose to any great heights, the Swifts left their opponents in the game until near the end by missing a clutch of gilt edged chances either side of half time. The team was rusty after not having games on the last two weekends (due to a bye and a postponement) and it took until well into the second half to take full control of the match.
It was left to Clark to ensure all three points left Vogel Street with the Swifts. He sidefooted his first home after excellent work by Jason Collins down the right and then found himself unmarked on the edge of the six yard box following an expertly worked free kick from Birchenough and Duncan Lowry.
The Swifts rock solid defenive unit, which has let in only one goal in over 500 minutes of football, was as effective as ever, while Andy Birchenough and Carlos Rodriguez ran the game from the middle of the park. Allan Ferreira, in his first game for the team in more than two months, was at his languid best on the right of midfield.
But it's goals that win games and Clark's half hour cameo will be what this tepid game is remembered for.
The Swifts have one final game next Saturday in Ngongotaha and then the Matamata Domain hosts the Federation League All Star Game on October 6. Then all you football fans will have to find something else to do on a Saturday.
