Metso
Matamata Swifts rose from their bye weekend-induced slumber
to amble their way through their home match against Cambridge. The
Swifts secured victory by the narrowest of margins and, while they
were far from their best, will be satified by taking home all three
points.
Alberto
Romero capitalised on the Cambridge keeper's second howling mistake
in five first half minutes to get the Swifts ahead. The keeper coughed
the ball up right in front of goal and presented Romero with a comfortable
chance. Only moments earlier he'd been caught in possession by Andrew
Taylor who rushed his shot and pushed the ball wide.
The Swifts didn't kick on from this, despite creating enough chances
for more goals. Cambridge defended strongly and were a solid match
for the home side. They had one glaring miss just after the break
when a header was blasted over the top, but created little else
apart from a handful of speculators from distance. Most of the play,
particularly during the second half, was at the correct end of the
field.
Dave Taylor, back in goal for the Swifts for the first time in three
years, had just enough to do to keep him interested. Taylor made
two good first half saves from long range shots and needed to be
sharp on a couple of slippery second half occasions. The mucky conditions
could have undone keepers of lesser ability.
Carlos Rodriguez and Andy Birchenough won the midfield battle for
Matamata which ensured overall victory for their team. Alberto Romero
proved he can be a match winner, even when the conditions conspire
against his style of play.
Coming off the bye this win was vital. While the performance was
a little rusty it was important to have a solid run before next
Saturday's incredibly vital fixture against league leaders, Taupo.
Swifts coach, Duncan Lowry, also used this match to have a look
at several players who have been doing well for the reserve and
youth teams. Allan Ferreira was solid in midfield, while youngsters,
Gareth Clarke and Michael Spencer came off the bench late on.
