The 2007 Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation League season has ended with a comprehensive victory by the North selection on a balmy, some might even say summery, afternoon in Matamata. Three goals in five minutes midway through the first half sealed the victory for the North over a South squad missing several of their original selections, including league Golden Boot, Alan Lamb from Taupo.
The South actually started the stronger, forcing Matamata's Gary Darkes, in the North goal, into action early on. Jordan Ball from Te Awamutu, in for Lamb, and Otorohanga's Jarred Wilson looked lively.
Grant McIlmurray from Cambridge will be able to tell his grandchildren he was the first player ever to score in a Waikato Bay of Plenty All Star game. He netted the opener after capitalising on a defensive blunder and passing the ball into an empty net.
Only moments later Leo Pardini from Tauranga smashed home the goal of the game. The Brazilian's dipping volley from twenty yards even had the South goalie, Kevin Buckle (Te Awamutu), applauding.
Neil Slater completed the northern hat trick with a goal made in Matamata. Slater, the Swifts' leading scorer, powered home a header from an excellent Scott Parsonage cross.
Huntly's Tama Hohaia completed the scoring in the first half. He found himself on the end of some excellent football by his team and hammered the ball home from close range.
The match lost some of its intensity after the break as the heat, along with the fact the result was already beyond doubt, started to kick in. Whakatane's Jamie Beharry rounded Buckle to score not long after he had another effort cleared off the line.
Rotorua United's Shadley Peterson completed the match scoring with a consolation goal for the South near the end of the match.
The midfield battle was the highlight of the game with Andy Birchenough (Matamata), Tama Hohaia and Alberto Romero (Matamata), shading it for the North over the impressive Shane King (Otorohanga) and Tony Wall (Taupo).
In attendence, along with the nearly 200 fans, were Mike Kernaghan (Deputy CEO Football New Zealand), Frank Van Hattum (Board Member Football New Zealand), Patsi Davies (Board Chairperson Waikato Bay of Plenty Football), John Turkington (CEO Waikato Bay of Plenty Football), and Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Board Members Barbara Caie and Bryce Wilson.
