On
Sunday, Matamata’s social side made the trip to Tokoroa for their
latest league fixture. On the back of a loss in a friendly the previous
weekend to Eastern Suburbs, Matamata were looking to do what they
do best in the Sunday league –win!
However, with numbers short even before they left and the majority
of those there looking like the walking dead, this was going to be
a real challenge. Having played Tokoroa once already this season and
scrapping a 2-1 win in the Scottish Cup, Matamata knew they were going
to have to be on form to get a result.
Once the game started nothing could prepare Matamata for the onslaught
they faced in the first half. With two goals down before the break,
Matamata knew they were lucky not to be down by at least six, a point
made clear by Jase during his half time speech. His speech seemed
to do the trick for Matamata who dutifully responded with their best
period of play during the match. This 15 minute period resulted with
a fortunate goal to Adam.
With Matamata having now got themselves back in the game and starting
to show form, Neil Wiseman decided he would show the ref how to ply
his trade as well. Unfortunately this left Matamata with no subs on
the bench and still 30 minutes of football to play. This wasn’t the
only problem for Matamata, as they really struggled with Tokoroa's
pace at the back.
With this being said all defenders did play really well to keep Tokoroa
out, even with Dave Taylor’s rendition of a Doug Howlett covering
tackle. So Neil’s first act as ref was to award a penalty to Tokoroa
for Dave’s tackle. Tokoroa gave the penalty to their only player not
to score this season. Fortunately, this remained the case as his penalty
sailed over the bar.
With this scare out of the way, Matamata pushed hard for an equalizer
and it came from a brilliant piece of football starting in their half
and finishing with Jase blasting the ball past the keeper on his near
post. Matamata continued to push for a winner, but coming away from
Tokoroa with a point from their first half display was certainly appreciated.
Matamata, upon leaving Tokoroa, were confronted with the news that
they must return there for their next friendly in a few weeks time.
Stay posted for the rematch details. |
