Going
into the long weekend with no reserves or first side playing, you
would have thought the sunday team would be a full house. Not so,
struggling to produce only 1 sideline substitute, they made the
trip to Ruakura to follow up on their back to back winning streak.
A well maintained pitch in the light rain was chosen and the game
got under way. With the home side down three players only to be
joined later by one more in the first half, eleven on nine would
be a slight advantage for the Swifts.
It was only a matter of persistance before renowned striker Joe
Alves put away the first goal. Chances became plentiful as the Swifts
opened up the field and began to play messy, but decent football
considering the wet conditions.
Shifting up a gear they scored again against the home side, with
flair as balls were lofted over the top of defence for Bevan Shelley
who put them away. Joel Chamberlain claimed his first ever goal
for the Swifts in 3 years to break the drought and bought the score
to 3-0. A controversial dive from Shelley in the 18yard box saw
local Hamilton hero Adam step up to take the penalty with pin point
accuracy.
4-0 at half time and the swifts made a few changes before stepping
back on the field. Outstanding defence from Anthony and Rocky reinforced
by Adam Graham as sweeper, who constantly held back attack after
attack and proceeded to feed the ball wide to the wings which made
the Ruakura side wobble several times under quick thinking.
Goal of the game went to Chris Bedford who supported a sideline
run then put a well weighted ball floating for the back post, only
to go deeper and over the keepers head in magnificent style seeing
the net and claiming another for the record books.
Rob Cox assisted Piki in the centre and came close but was denied
by a fingertip save, although came away with the player of the day
for his effort in midfield and exellent supporting play.
Dave Taylor with another clean sheet, proving he's not ready to
throw in the towel just yet.
The final whistle sounded seeing the Swifts retain their undefeated
run as league leaders. 6-0 With a Scottish cup match looming this
coming Sunday. It will test their skill and ability to play as a
team in their hardest game yet.
Can they dish out another upset or will they it come crashing down
in a blaze of glory?
