The
Matamata Swifts Ladies completed their triumphant 2006 division
B campaign with another resounding victory, this time smashing fifteen
goals without reply past their helpless opponents from Tokoroa.
The scene was set early on as Matamata wasted no time getting on
the score board. Sarah Monteith drilled the ball into an empty net
in the first minute and the team started clicking up through the
gears from there. Some good goals were to follow soon after, with
Nat Gaskell's acrobatic volley and Serena Jenkins' drive from 25-yards
being particular highlights.
A six goal first half was a mere taste of what was to follow. The
Swifts Ladies were merciless after the break notching another nine
goals to take them to their second largest winning margin and past
double figures for the sixth time this season.
While the goals came from the usual suspects, and with them the
glory, the Swifts Ladies were strong all over the park. Jo Good
and captain, Jenn Wild, were dominant at the back and goalie, Jenn
Hull, dealt with everything that came her way to keep another clean
sheet. Youngsters Jamie Morgan and Ashley Ferguson contributed well
out wide.
The Swifts Ladies can now ease into a well deserved summer break
and reflect on a superb season. Well led by Nat Gaskell and Jenn
Wild, the team has unearthed a number of keen, eager and improving
young players. They can look forward with hope to their elevation
next season to the top Waikato division.
Goalscorers: Nat Gaskell (6), Sarah Monteith (3), Sarah Hockley
(3), Serena Jenkins (3).
Player of the day: captain Jenn Wild.
