The
Matamata Women's Soccer Team traveled away to Te Awamutu this Sunday
and after a difficult game last week against Cambridge in the Uncle
Toby's Tournament it was back to business.
Matamata were hoping to dominate the game from the start but this
would not be the case. It took a long time for the team to settle
into a groove, with a lot of the play being made by the Te Awamutu
team. They held their positions well and were physically aggressive
towards Matamata, which is one thing that we are not used to.
Although Matamata had a lot of attempts at goal none of them were
on target, which seemed to frustrate Matamata even more. The Te
Awamutu frontline always sent the ball out wide to cross over but
Matamata managed to hold them out with some great running cover
defence.
So for a good 30 mins of the first half everyone was running around
in circles as the majority of the game was played in the centre
of the field.
With 5 mins to go in the first half , Nat Gaskell was brought on
and the Matamata Swifts Football Club's top goal scorer did what
she does best and finally got one past the Te Awamutu keeper. It
was almost like a switch was turned on and Sarah Monteith scored
again for Matamata pretty much straight away.
With the half time score at 2-0 and a good talk about changing the
game plan, Matamata came back on to the field as a new side.
Matamata slowed the game down and brought it back to basics. With
plenty of passing and communication to one another, so this in turned
gave the strikers up front more ball to work with.
Serena Jenkins scored 2 brilliant goals that just seemed to glide
over the top of Te Awamutu keeper's head and Nat Gaskell added 2
more to her tally with some fancy foot work to beat the Te Awamutu
defence and put the ball away into the back of the net.
Over all it was another great game of soccer played by the Matamata
women but in the same instance it was also a very frustrating game.
Goal scorers were: Nat Gaskell - 3, Serena Jenkins - 2, Sarah Monteith
- 1 and a own goal by Te Awamutu.
Matamata Car Painters player of the day was sweeper Jenn Wild, who
managed to get ball to foot every time and clear it out of the danger
zone.
Next Sunday Matamata play at home at the Domain with kick off at
11am. The game will be a top of the table clash against Waihi. So
come along and support the girls!
