Today's
game showed that Matamata had not had a lot of consistency in their
game time, so they were definitely rusty around the edges. The first
20 minutes of the game saw a lot of play going backwards and forwards
with no real advantage to either team.
Matamata let themselves down in the basic ball skills, but in saying
that there were some glimpses of the true standard that Matamata
does hold. Kerrie McVeigh opened up the scoring for Matamata with
two great goals after some stubborn effort and following up on the
ball. Elena Dimcia was next to add to the tally.
The start of the second half yet again showed Matamata's weakness
of starting with their head in the game. Morrinsville stepped it
up a notch and got more physically aggressive towards the Matamata
players. There were a couple of spectacular tackles made especially
on centre back, Jenn Wild, who ended up eating dirt, so to speak.
Leah Higgins scored Matamata's final goal, sending the ball from
out wide to cross in for the Matamata strikers, but in the end they
weren't needed as the ball curled into the top right of the goal.
Morrinsville did come back to score a run away goal where the Matamata
defense just did not have the legs to catch the striker.
Also worth a mention was the great comeback of Lani Guilford after
sustaining a serious knee injury at the start of the season. At
full time it was 4-1 to a very tired Matamata side.
The Matamata Car Painters player of the day went to Kerrie McVeigh.
Next Sunday Matamata travel away to Porritt Stadium to play Wanderers
which will be a hard and physical game.
