Match Report

Well it is official. Matamata Swifts Ladies are now the winners of Waikato Womens Division B!

They wrapped up the title with a very convincing away win against Melville. In the back of the girls minds there was the thought that today would also be the day when the Swifts Ladies would beat the long standing club record of 135 goals scored in a season for a ladies' team, which was set back in 1997.

The Swifts Ladies opened the game in their usual true style by letting Melville score in the 1st minute of the game. Yet again the girls were half asleep. But not for long as Sarah Hockley opened up the scoring with the first of her four goals of the game. Matamata started to settle into their game very well and spent a lot of their time in the attacking third, although it was very crowded up there with the Melville side dropping all of their players back into defense.

But the girls manage to find the gaps and end the 1st half at 3-1. At the half time break Matamata had it made known to them that their season goal tally was at 134.

The 2nd half started off with a hiss and a roar and Matamata bought out the skills. The young girls of the team did really well in supporting the more experienced players. I cannot remember who scored the equalizing goal for the club record but I definitely remember who scored the ice breaker - goal No 136, and of course it was captain Jenn Wild! Jenn collected a back pass from Nat Gaskell, then in turn nailed it towards the goal which saw the ball roll straight between the keeper's legs!

So after this was achieved everyone was left feeling very proud of their efforts in working as a team to achieve this record. At the end of the game the Matamata Swifts Ladies come away with a 9-2 win against Melville, the Division B title under their belts and the new club record of 140 goals, which will be extended given there are three more games to go.

The goal scorers for today were Sarah Hockley - 4, Nat Gaskell - 2, Sarah Monteith, Serena Jenkins and Jenn Wild.

The Matamata Car Painters Player of the Day went to the young but gutsy Jaimee Morgan out on the Right Wing. Matamata play at home Next Sunday against Te Awamutu, kick off is at 11am at the Domain. See you there!
