Match Report

Well what a beauty of a day to play soccer and it was almost a shock to system to be playing in such fine conditions!!!

So taking this into account the Ladies wanted to pick up the pace and really get stuck in. It was a great game to watch from the sideline as for once our team has to many players and a couple each week have to sit the game out, something we are definatly not used to!

Having played against Wanderers last season we had a point to prove and this was more noticeable in Captain Nat Gaskell. Nat had a blinder of a game and probably the best she has played since coming back after injury.

No-one from the Wanderers team had much luck in defending against Nat and her goals for the game speaks for themselves. Two of her four goals especially stood out. The first was an absolute perfect strike of the ball from outside the 18 yard box that just sailed clean over the keepers head and the second one Nat caught the Wanderers keeper wandering too far out of her box. Nat took aim from the half way and capitalized on the error.

There was one bad incident though. Lani Guilford sustained a painful injury to her knee. The first suspicion was that she had broken her leg and the ambulance was called to help.

Later it was established that the leg wasn't broken but a snapped tendon will see Lani out of action for quiet some time which is a real loss to this team!

The confidence has improved with many of the newbies starting to back themselves, especially in the tackling aspect of the game.

So Sunday's game has seen yet another improvement in the Ladies team, with the members starting to learn how each other plays the game and starting to create opportunities for the strikers up front.

Goal scorers for the game were: Nat Gaskell - 4, Sarah Monteith - 1 and Elena Dimcia - 2.

The Matamata Car Painters player of the Day was Bogga Jonsdottir. Bogga ("Vodka") was playing at Left Back and had an awesome game that made it hard for the Wanderers attackers to get through. She also took the ball up front on many occasions.

Matamata Ladies next game is the big trip away to Taumaranui.
