The
Swifts reserves suffered their first home loss of the season when
a last gasp goal by the visitors saw them snatch the win.
Starting the game level on points with their close rivals the Swifts,
a little under strength on the day, knew it was going to be a hard
tussle in the tricky windy conditions.
Matamata opened the scoring midway through the first half with a
stunning 30 metre freekick by Luis Maldonado finding the top corner.
Playing into the wind in the second half the Swifts were holding
their own with the visitors shooting high and wide but then they
equalised with their own stunning 30 metre strike which dipped late
under the crossbar.
With time virtually up a defensive clearing header by the Swifts
rebounded off a Cambridge forward for an unlikely winner.
For the Swifts Pete Challis marshalled the defence well with numbers
getting back in defence. In the midfield Luis Maldonado, Nicholas
Sandoval and Jono Monteith grafted all afternoon while upfront Matt
Monteith was called on to cover extra ground.
