Matamata
Swifts Waikato Premier League title charge continued apace with
another crushing victory at the Matamata Domain. This time the victims
were Unicol and the Swifts, after a slow start, sprinted home on
the back of a five-goal second half performance.
Swifts
coach, Duncan Lowry, opted for an adventurous 3-4-3 formation from
the outset this week. The match began with a similar rhythm to many
recent Matamata performances, with the Swifts setting the tempo
early on and giving their opponents little respite. The first half,
however, brought to light the one slightly worrying aspect of Matamata's
game to date - their current inability to kill sides off early in
the piece.
The Swifts, looking great through the middle of the park, had a
glut of chances during the first half hour. They really should have
had three or four goals during this period, but had to settle for
a lone Duncan Lowry strike. Lowry's drive from outside the box took
a slight deflection on the way to giving Matamata the lead.
Unicol's best period of the match came during the five mintues leading
up to the break. A couple of uncharacteristic Matamata errors, combined
with a slight lack of composure, almost led to an equaliser. Unicol's
sole chance of the first half almost got them back on level terms.
Thankfully for Matamata, the ball dribbled inches wide.
The match was over within minutes of the restart. Some stern words
at the interval got the Matamata players buzzing. The crowd had
barely had time to settle back into their seats before the second
- decisive - goal came. Scott Parsonage found himself unmarked inside
the box and was able to side foot home an excellent John Massey
pass. Moments later Parsonage had his second goal, almost an exact
replica of his first. This time Adam Graham was the provider and
Parsonage did the business again.
There
was no let up for the visitors as the Swifts stretched their lead
with two more goals. Graham got himself on the score sheet with
a sweetly struck drive and was joined there soon after by John Massey
who volleyed home the rebound following a Matamata free kick.
Massey grabbed his second, and Matamata's final goal for the day,
with 15 minutes remaining. It was a typically cool strike from close
range.
All three Swifts substitutes were able to get some valuable game
time. Juan Carlos Rodriguez came in well on the right side of midfield
while Jason Collins, in his first run of the season, almost grabbed
his first goal
The Swifts continued to create chances, but couldn't add to their
tally, while at the other end goalie, Gary Darkes, was kept busy
enough with the sporadic raids the now demoralised visitors were
able to muster.
The Swifts central midfield juggernaut featuring Andy Birchenough,
Alberto Romero and Duncan Lowry was again dominant. The languid
Romero continues to amaze with some of the delightful passes he's
able to deliver.
At the back, Ged Parkinson was as solid as ever and was ably supported
by his two lieutenants, Colin Taylor and Dai Lowry. Man of the match,
Scott Parsonage, was as lively as ever on the left hand side of
the Swifts' front three.
