The
Matamata Swifts Waikato Premier League (WPL) juggernaut rumbled
on with a comfortable, and reasonably convincing, victory on Saturday
at bottom-placed Unicol. While the Swifts didn't have everything
their own way they did most things right and emerged from this sodden
fixture with yet another three points to maintain their lead at
the top of the WPL.
Matamata,
usually such slow starters, began this match emphatically. The small
crowd barely had time to make themselves comfortable before chirpy
midfielder, John Massey, stroked the ball home to give the Swifts
the lead. Only one Unicol player had touched the ball before ii
was being picked out of the back of the net, such was the speed
of this opening goal.
While this start seemed to rock the home side they didn't start
wobbling until later on in the first half. They even managed to
send a slight tremor through the Swifts side when they equalised
on the ten minute mark, courtesy of an angled screamer after some
lazy Matamata defending.
The Swifts got themselves back on track with two more first half
goals, although they really should have had a few more. John Massey
added to his tally with another crisp strike while Adam Graham notched
his obligatory goal with a nice outside-of-the-foot finish.
After the break the Swifts were, if anything, even more dominant
but it took a while to find another goal. When it did come, however,
it was well worth the wait. Rodrigo Navarro, restored to the first
team after several weeks with the reserves, chested a cross down
and smacked a brutal, dipping, left-footed volley under the cross
bar from all of 25 yards.
Soon
after Navarro showed he is just as comfortable inside the box when
he added his second, a right footed drive from ten yards.
With the result secure Matamata was able to hand first team debut's
to Neil Slater and young Jono Monteith before finishing the match
with a flourish. Bustling striker, Jason Collins, was brought down
in the box to give Ged Parkinson, the Swifts' penalty king, a shot
from the spot. Parkinson doesn't waste such opportunities and within
seconds the Swifts had six.
As they have so many times this season, Matamata won this game through
a dominating midfield performance. Alberto Romero and Andy Birchenough
continued to do what they've been doing for weeks, while John Massey
and man of the match, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, added bite and precision
to overwhelm their opponents.
The Swifts back three of Dai Lowry, Ged Parkinson and Colin Taylor
coped well with the greasy conditions and kept Unicol to only a
handful of chances throughout the match.
