The
Matamata Swifts extended their unbeaten Waikato Premier league campaign
on a wet Saturday afternoon, putting on a football spectacle at
the Domain, and dominating their experienced opponents in the two
team's first meeting of the season.
The
Swifts started slowly, almost seeming surprised by the time and
space they were allowed, and were unable to make the early possession
they enjoyed count. Poor option taking, disappointing final passes
and a lack of urgency put an end to the numerous attacking movements.
The breakthrough finally came after 20 minutes. An accurate Colin
Taylor cross was cleverly flicked into the net via the head of Swifts'
striker Adam Graham.
The Swifts raised the speed of the game with immediate results.
Captain Andy Birchenough had no problem increasing the Swifts lead
from the penalty spot. Moments later, striker John Massey increased
his season's tally with a deceiving left foot toe-poke leaving the
Melville goalie no chance.
Matamata went to half time with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The second half held more of the same. It was not long until Massey
was in the scoring again, firing in a near post shot and again leaving
the keeper unsighted and helpless.
The Swifts rolled on, showing skill and class all over the park,
and were able to create and utilise space wide. The result? More
goals.
A
low Neil Slater shot was fumbled by the keeper leaving Scott Parsonage
with a simple tap in from a metre out. Slater was again the provider
as Adam Graham grabbed his second of the match. The Swifts were
unlucky not to add to their total; Massey robbed of his hat-trick
by the goal post and many other half chances not being finished.
The opponents however never gave up, searching for a consolation
goal. Their resilience paid off when they were awarded a dubious
penalty. Swifts player-coach Duncan Lowry was booked after mouthing
off at the ref, to the amusement of the Melville players who were
amazed that a team up 6-0 argued the decision so passionately.
After all the drama the penalty was well put away leaving goalie,
turned 100 metre champ, Gary Darkes, with no chance.
Lowry found himself in the action again, this time at the other
end of the field, brilliantly challenging two opponents in the air
to powerfully head home a Birchenough corner, completing the scoring
and another successful day at the office for the top of the table
Swifts.
