Brown back at the helm
Matamata Swifts AFC is pleased to announce the signing of Cameron Brown as head coach of the Matamata Swifts Ladies football team.
Cameron last coached the side in 2004 and is looking forward to getting back involved in football. “I’ve had a few years off and enjoyed my time away,” says Cameron. “But now the time is right for me to get back in the game. My daughter, Juliana, is a squad member and she has given me some added motivation to grab hold of the reigns once again.”
Matamata is building some depth in ladies football. This is something that has been particularly noted in the youth age-group, with some of the young players at the college moving into senior football during 2008. “I’m looking forward to working with the players we currently have, along with all the players new to senior ladies football,” enthuses Cameron. “From what I’ve seen we have the potential to put together a very good side.”
Fans can expect to be entertained when they watch the Swifts Ladies this season. “I like my sides to play expansive, attacking football so hopefully the players will enjoy training and enjoy playing for Matamata,” says Cameron. “And hopefully that will bring a few more spectators along to the Matamata Domain on a Sunday morning as well.”
The Swifts Ladies play in the Waikato Ladies 1st division as well as the Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation Cup. The side finished 6th in the Waikato in 2008 but their best performances were reserved for the Federation Cup, in which they finished 3rd, ahead of football powerhouses Cambridge, Tauranga and Taupo. “If we get a little more consistency then I think our results will be even better than last year,” explains Cameron. “I’m excited about what we can achieve this season.”
The team begins pre-season training on Wednesday February 25. Initial sessions will be at the Matamata Domain. “Training starts at 6.30pm each Wednesday and everyone is welcome to come along for a look,” says Cameron. “We’d be more than happy to see some new faces and have them get involved with the Swifts Ladies in 2009.”
