Locals win Boxing Day Test

A Matamata XI has beaten a Tauranga XI 6-5 in the first ever Matamata AFC Boxing Day Test. In weather far superior to that put on by Melbourne for the other Boxing Day Test, football's version was just as gripping as the cricket in Australia. The locals led 6-3 midway through the second half but had to hold out a strong late charge by the visitors. More pics here

The match was followed by a feast provided by the club's Uruguayan contingent. The slow-cooked Bar-b-que lamb was particularly tasty.
