South team pays the penalty
The South team, which included five Matamata players, has lost in a penalty shoot-out to the North team in the annual Federation League All Star Game. The scores were level 3-3 at full time. Mark Abbs showed superb touch to score the South's opener, following good work by Taupo's Jesse Smith and Matamata's Mike Spencer. That finally levelled the scores at 1-1 seconds on half time, after Andy Birchenough had an earlier penalty saved.
Taupo's Gaetano Dedual and Mark Jones, right on full time, scored the other goals for the South while Smith showed it's not only Matamata players who can miss from the penalty spot when he followed Birchenough's lead during the second half. The North team's keeper saved three further penalties in the shoot-out to ensure his side went home as winners. Jon Allen and Tom Pamment also played for the South, while Tim Miller and Grant Cooper were unavailable.
